Phillies president Dave Dombrowski has made a habit of gambling on veteran relievers with big-league experience — and Medina is the latest roll of the dice. The 28-year-old righty was in camp this spring with the Mariners and hasn’t pitched in the majors since the 2022 season.

Medina, who saw time with the Phillies and Mets from 2020-22, had a 5.03 ERA in 34 innings out of Tacoma’s pen this season.

Bolton was the lone player from Seattle’s 40-man roster exiting big-league camp in the latest round of cuts. Arroyo is one of the Mariners’ top prospects and should reach Double-A at some point in the next few months. Díaz and Medina figure to make it to Seattle at some point as emergency stopgap options.

Medina heads to Seattle as extra organizational relief depth after spending last season in the Nationals’ system at Triple-A Rochester, finishing with a solid 3.76 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 60/26 K/BB ratio across 64 2/3 innings (49 appearances).

Medina posted a 5.35 ERA and 1.56 WHIP across 19 appearances in the majors throughout three seasons before spending the 2023 season in Korea. The now 27-year-old will give Washington organizational depth in the high minors of their minor league system.

The right-hander was signed to a minor league contract earlier in the month, but the Brewers will grant him his release as he plans to join the Kia Tigers in the Korea Baseball Organization. Perhaps if the 25-year-old hurler has success there, he’ll try his luck stateside again in 2024.

This clears out 40-man roster space for the promotion of lefty Alex Claudio. Medina, 25, had surrendered 18 runs -- 16 earned -- through 23 2/3 innings of relief this season with the Mets for a 6.08 ERA.
