Aníbal Sánchez officially announced his retirement from professional baseball on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old hurler ultimately had a terrific 16-year career in the big leagues, going 116-119 with a 4.06 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 1774/686 K/BB ratio over 2017 2/3 innings for the Marlins, Tigers, Braves and Nationals. Sánchez finished fourth in the Cy Young award voting in the American League with the Tigers in 2013. Best wishes to the next chapter of his life.

Aníbal Sánchez was charged with four runs over five innings on Saturday in a win over the Phillies.
Sánchez drew the starting assignment for the front end of Saturday’s doubleheader against Philadelphia and got plenty of run support from the Nationals’ offense to pull out a win. He struck out six batters and only issued three walks. The 38-year-old veteran right-hander finishes the 2022 campaign with a respectable 4.28 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 48/33 K/BB ratio across 69 1/3 innings (14 starts).

Aníbal Sánchez hurled five scoreless innings on Sunday in a win over the Marlins.
Sánchez recorded four strikeouts and scattered four baserunners over five flawless frames. The 38-year-old veteran right-hander has allowed three earned runs or fewer in an astounding eight consecutive starts dating back to August 13. He’ll bring a serviceable 4.06 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 42/30 K/BB ratio across 64 1/3 innings (13 starts) into a road matchup on Saturday against the Phillies.

Aníbal Sánchez allowed two runs over six innings on Sunday in a loss to the Marlins.
Sánchez was simply outdueled by Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara, who went the distance in a complete-game victory. The 38-year-old veteran right-hander gave up four hits, including a sixth-inning go-ahead solo homer to Garrett Cooper, and finished with three strikeouts and one walk. He’s recorded a pedestrian 4.40 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 38/28 K/BB ratio across 59 1/3 innings (12 starts) this season. He’s in line for a rematch against the Marlins on Saturday in Miami.

Aníbal Sánchez allowed one run over two innings on Sunday in a rain-shortened start against the Phillies.
Sánchez handed out three free passes and gave up two hits, but managed to limit the Phillies to just one run before a three-hour rain delay ended his outing. The 38-year-old veteran right-hander has recorded a lackluster 4.56 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 35/26 K/BB ratio across 53 1/3 innings (11 starts) this season. He’ll square off against the Braves next Monday in a road matchup.

Aníbal Sánchez blanked the Cardinals for five innings Monday in the Nationals’ 7-0 victory.
Sánchez has won back-to-back starts after opening the year 0-5. Incredibly, the Nationals have prevailed in each of his last five outings. He was far from dominant in striking out three batters today, but it was enough. He’ll face the Phillies next.

Aníbal Sánchez limited the A’s to one run and three hits over seven innings in the Nationals’ 5-1 victory Wednesday.
Sánchez, who hadn’t even completed six innings in a start before getting 21 outs tonight, finally got his first victory in his ninth start of the year. He’s now 1-5 with a 5.05 ERA. Next on the schedule for him is a start against the Cardinals.

Aníbal Sánchez lasted only 4 1/3 innings but didn’t allow a run Wednesday versus the Mariners in the Nationals’ 3-1 win.
The Mariners made Sánchez work, as he needed 81 pitches to cover his 4 1/3 frames. He got some help from Hunter Harvey, who relieved Sánchez with a runner on third and one out in the fifth and struck out back-to-back hitters. It was deuces wild for Sánchez, who gave up just two hits and two walks but also struck out only a pair and had two swinging strikes. He faces the A’s at home next.

Aníbal Sánchez gave up one run over five innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Padres.
Sánchez held the Padres to just one hit, a Manny Machado solo homer, over five solid frames. He struck out four batters and only issued a pair of walks. The soft-tossing 38-year-old right-hander will carry a bloated 6.43 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 26/16 K/BB ratio across 35 innings (seven starts) into a road matchup on Tuesday against the Mariners.

Anibal Sánchez wasn’t at his best in a no-decision on Saturday, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings against the Padres.
The veteran right-hander walked three and struck out four on the evening. Most of the damage done against him came via the long ball, with solo shots from Manny Machado in the third inning and Trent Grisham in the fourth. Sánchez got just eight swings and misses on the night while posting a 26 percent CSW. He’ll carry an unsightly 7.20 ERA and 1.60 WHIP into a rematch against these same Padres in San Diego on Thursday as he’ll try once again to earn his first victory of the season.
