New SMU coach Larry Brown is making moves in his first few weeks at the helm.

Since questions were raised about his age and ability to recruit because of it, he has fired back with a big-time hire, reports the Houston Chronicle.

Ulric Maligi, who has been at the University of Houston for the past two seasons, is headed to SMU as an assistant coach.

The 27-year-old Maligi graduated from Howard in 2006 and was integral in Houston’s impressive recruiting class due on campus in 2012-13, which includes Top 20 prospect Danuel House and forward Danrad “Chicken” Knowles.

Maligi has strong roots in the Texas recruiting scene and will join Jerrance Howard and Rod Strickland at SMU.

He formerly coached the Dallas Mustangs in the AAU.

As Jeff Goodman of reports, SMU is still awaiting word on Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich and whether he will also join Brown’s staff.

As it stands now, SMU’s recruiting class is headed by two strong recruits already signed: sharp-shooter Brian Bernardi of Xaverian (N.Y.) and big man Blaise Mbargorba of the Peddie School (N.J.).
