Backup QB Sherrod Harris decides to leave Texas

With Colt McCoy leaving for the NFL following an outstanding four-year career, there’s little doubt that the Texas offense belongs to sophomore Garrett Gilbert.

If something were to happen to Gilbert, though? It’s freshmen as far as the eye can see as the most “experienced” quarterback behind the starter is no longer a Longhorn.

Citing a source close to the program, the Austin American-Statesman is reporting this afternoon that backup Sherrod Harris has decided to forego playing his senior season and will instead focus on graduating.

Harris, who played in five games during his four seasons in Austin, was beaten out for the backup job by Gilbert last year, and was set to battle freshmen Connor Wood and Case McCoy for the No. 2 job in summer camp.

Perhaps the fact that Harris was set to be beaten out for the backup job for the second year in a row by a freshman (Wood) played a role in his decision to concentrate on his studies? Regardless, the Longhorns are very young and raw at the position with Harris’ departure; fortunately, the talent is there as well if it’s forced into service.
