Just a few weeks after the Lancaster County Attorney’s office decided not to file charges domestic assault charges against Nebraska defensive end Barry Turner, the same attorney’s office has decided to dismiss charges against another Cornhusker, tight end Ben Cotton.Cotton, the son of Nebraska assistant coach Barney Cotton, was arrested for minor consumption and disturbing the peace after an altercation inside a dormitory on February 28, and charged on March 13.It’s probably dangerous to jump to conclusions on issues like this, but the Lancaster County Attorney’s office is setting a pretty poor precident for incidents with the Big Red football team. While Turner’s situation raises more than a few eyebrows, what with the case including hitting his live-in girlfriend with a pillow at “medium strength” and biting her underneath her right arm, this is the second incident where a Cornhuskers football player was arrested only to have the charges dismissed within a month.(It’d be one thing if Pellini had the team winning...)In all seriousness, and without getting the full details surrounding Turner and Cotton’s arrests and subsequent dismissals, I’m not ready to call out the County Attorney for giving a free ride to football players, but we should probably start keeping a closer eye on the transgressions of the football team in Lincoln. After all, we all still remember Lawrence Phillips.
