Senior offensive lineman Elliott Porter did not play in the season-opening win over Wisconsin. He’s not expected to play in this weekend’s game against Sam Houston State.
Now, it appears, we know the reason behind the (former, for now) starting center’s unavailability for Weeks 1 and 2 of the college football season.
Citing multiple unnamed sources, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported Thursday night that Porter will serve the second of a two-game suspension Saturday. According to the Advocate, the suspension stemmed from what it described as “abnormalities in his pay from a summer job.”
Just what those abnormalities were is unknown, whether it be a higher rate of pay standard to his unnamed job or one of those infamous no-show, all-pay jobs. Regardless of the reason, Porter is expected to return for next Saturday’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.
Whether Porter reclaims his starting job upon his return remains to be seen. Last season, he started all but one game for the Tigers. During summer camp, he lost the starting job to Ethan Pocic, although that could’ve been, in part, due to the looming suspension.
Pocic will, though, get the start against Sam Houston State tomorrow.
