ESPN New York expects Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan to contribute as both a kick and punt returner in 2012.
GM Jerry Reese has already singled out Jernigan as an in-house candidate to replace Mario Manningham as the team’s No. 3 wide receiver. Playing a part-time role on offense would still allow the 2011 third-round pick to help out on returns. Jernigan will compete with Domenik Hixon for punt return duties. Da’Rel Scott and D.J. Ware will be in the mix on kick returns. Jernigan should be on all 2012 sleeper lists, especially in leagues that award points for return yardage.
  • FA Wide Receiver #11
The Giants have yanked Devin Thomas off kickoff return duties.
Thomas will likely now be a game-day scratch because he doesn’t contribute on offense. The Giants are expected to turn to Da’Rel Scott and D.J. Ware on kickoff returns. Thomas was averaging a mediocre 23.7 yards per return and mishandled one in two of the last three games. Assuming he doesn’t fumble, Scott would be the Giants’ best option with 4.34 speed in the 40-yard dash.
  • FA Running Back #33
Rookie Giants RB Da’Rel Scott suffered a hyperextended knee in New York’s Week 17 win over the Cowboys, but said he was fine afterward.
Scott didn’t return after going down late in the first half, but sounds like he’ll be good to go for New York’s Wild Card tilt with the Falcons. Limited to 29 total yards on seven touches in 11 games, the seventh-round pick is far from assured of a 2012 roster spot.
  • FA Running Back #33
Giants RB Da’Rel Scott rushed twice for 11 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Eagles, adding one catch for nine yards.
Scott was pressed into action after D.J. Ware suffered a concussion on the final play of the first half. Ahmad Bradshaw is tentatively expected to return in Week 12, but Scott is worth keeping an eye on if both Bradshaw and Ware end up sitting out against the Saints.
  • Running Back
Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) has been ruled out of the Giants’ Week 9 matchup with the Patriots.
We know that surgery is not an option right now, but Bradshaw’s long-term status will be touchy until reports start to clear up. Brandon Jacobs is in line for 15-18 touches with D.J. Ware and Da’Rel Scott in change-of-pace roles. Center David Baas (knee) has also been ruled out, and the interior run game will suffer a bit with backup Kevin Boothe at the helm.
  • Running Back
Coach Tom Coughlin indicated Friday that Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) will have to improve to reach “game-time decision” status this week.
Bradshaw is listed as “doubtful” for Sunday’s game against the Patriots, though Coughlin confirmed that surgery is not an option right now. Brandon Jacobs is a good bet for 15-18 touches against the Patriots with D.J. Ware and Da’Rel Scott in change-of-pace roles.
  • FA Running Back #28
D.J. Ware was forced from Sunday’s game against the Eagles with a concussion, and will not return.
Ware took a crushing helmet-to-helmet hit from Eagles DT Cullen Jenkins on the Giants’ final offensive play of the first half, and was obviously woozy as he walked off the field. Before going down, he had rushed three times for -3 yards, and hauled in two catches for 17 yards. Da’Rel Scott has come on as New York’s change-of-pace back behind Brandon Jacobs.
  • FA Running Back #33
Giants RB Da’Rel Scott underwent a right knee debridement.
It’s essentially a clean-out procedure of the meniscus. Scott has appeared in four games this year, but only recorded an offensive touch in one of those outings.
  • FA Running Back #33
Giants placed RB Da’Rel Scott (knee) on season-ending injured reserve.
Scott underwent a right knee debridement on Wednesday. In layman’s terms, it was essentially a clean-up procedure to remove loose debris and tissue. The second-year back out of Maryland rushed for nine yards on six carries in 2012. The Giants needed the roster spot for Chris Canty’s activation off PUP.
  • FA Running Back #33
Giants running backs coach Jerald Ingram said he envisions rookie Da’Rel Scott as the team’s eventual third-down back.
Scott has world-class speed and is a good receiver out of the backfield, but the Giants are wary of his ability to pick up the blitz. The seventh-round pick was also extremely injury prone at Maryland. Scott is more of a project than fantasy prospect at this point.
