AVONDALE, La. – Bo Van Pelt concedes he’s been “terrible” this season, and last year wasn’t much better, with just a single top 10 in 22 tries.
“I think I’m leading the Tour in others,” he joked.
Two months ago in Tampa, looking to change the momentum (two top 25s in 12 starts), Van Pelt picked up a mid-length putter and began stroking a few “Matt Kuchar-style” – the arm-lock putting method – and “liked it right away.”

The results haven’t shown yet – he’s still outside the top 150 in strokes gained-putting – but Van Pelt needed only 25 swipes during a Friday 63 at the Zurich Classic. The 63 – which included two eagles on his inward nine, including on the par-5 18th – represented an 11-shot improvement from his opening 74. It also was the low round of the day by two.
“I haven’t had many of these days,” he said. “To shoot a good score and make a bunch of birdies, it reminds you that you can still do it.”
