Points atop leaderboard in Omaha

OMAHA, Nebraska -- D.A. Points fired an 8-under-par 63 on Thursday to take the first-round lead of the Cox Classic at Champions Run.

Garth Mulroy, Vance Veazey, David Branshaw, Ryan Hietala and Chris Kamin share second place at 7-under 64.

Scoring was fairly easy on Thursday. A total of 93 players broke par on Thursday, but none went lower than Points.

Points began on the 10th tee Thursday and broke into red figures quickly with a five-foot birdie putt at the par-five 10th. After an 18-foot par save at 11, his next birdie came at the par-four 13th when he rolled in a seven-footer.

At the 237-yard, par-3 16th, Points hit a 3-iron to 15 feet and holed the birdie putt. He kicked in a three-footer for birdie at 17 and closed his opening nine with a 25-foot birdie putt at the 18th.

Points continued his fine play after the turn with a 20-foot birdie putt at one. His only miscue of the round occurred at the par-4 second. Points missed a 10-foot par save, but that would be the last error for the three-time Nationwide Tour winner.

Points ran home an 18-foot birdie putt at the fifth and made it two in a row with a 12-footer at No. 6.

He closed the round in style at the 315-yard, par-four ninth. Points knocked his approach a foot from the hole and tapped in for the birdie that gave him the lead.

‘Today I birdied the holes I was supposed to birdie,’ said Points, who is 36th on the Nationwide Tour money list. ‘All in all, today I did everything I was supposed to. I’m not used to holing 20-foot putts so when I make those it’s an extra bonus.’

Points credits some of his success with the course this week.

‘I love this course and I love coming here every year,’ said Points. ‘It’s not the hardest course, but its a fun course. If you hit quality shots, you have a great chance at birdie.’

Two-time winner this season Colt Knost, David McKenzie, Kris Blanks and Dave Schultz are knotted in seventh place at 6-under 65.
