Leonard Pope had three receptions for 26 yards against the Patriots in Week 11.
Sometimes a new rookie quarterback can cause a tight end to get more looks, and together Pope and Jake O’Connell (three catches, 22 yards) were targeted 10 times. We’ll let you know if one of the mediocre duo emerges, but we won’t be holding our breath.
  • FA Tight End #82
Chiefs signed TE Jake O’Connell to a one-year contract.
The 2009 seventh-rounder started four games last season, producing seven receptions and 52 yards. He’ll play a backup role behind Tony Moeaki in 2012.

The Kansas City Star says that TE Jake O’Connell is “in a fight for his roster spot.”

  • FA Tight End #82
Chiefs placed TE Jake O’Connell (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.
O’Connell is primarily used as a blocking specialist. He registered three catches for 18 yards on the season and will be a free agent at the end of the year. Kansas City signed OL Rich Ranglin from the practice squad to take O’Connell’s roster spot.

    Chiefs waived TE Jake O’Connell.
The 2009 sixth-rounder is athletic with good speed, but he’s never been much of a blocker. He played 20 games with the Chiefs, catching just six passes for 53 yards.
  • FA Tight End #82
Chiefs signed seventh-round TE Jake O’Connell to a three-year contract.
O’Connell recorded 25 receptions for 258 yards as a Miami (Ohio) senior. Blessed with above average speed and hands, he’s in the mix to replace Tony Gonzalez. Expect Brad Cottam to win the job, but O’Connell may immediately be No. 2 on the depth chart.

Broncos signed TE Jake O’Connell, formerly of the Chiefs.
No. 5 tight end Lucas Reed recently went down with an injury, so O’Connell will take his place as a camp body. He was a 2009 seventh-round pick.
  • FA Tight End #82
Chiefs TE Jake O’Connell has caught fire in practice recently, according to KCChiefs.com’s Josh Looney.
O’Connell has scored three TDs over the last three days, with each score “going down as highlight material.” Rookie Tony Moeaki will be the Chiefs’ primary pass-catching tight end, but O’Connell can provide athletic depth.
