Falcons C Todd McClure (knee) has been declared out for Week 5.
McClure aggravated the knee injury that held him out in Weeks 1 and 2 in Atlanta’s win over the Seahawks last Sunday. He’ll be replaced by Joe Hawley, who has been far from dynamic in McClure’s absence.
  • FA Center #66
Falcons selected Wisconsin C/G Peter Konz with the No. 55 pick in the 2012 draft.
The consensus top center in the draft, Konz lacks upper-body strength, has durability concerns, and is tall for the position. On the positive side, the second-team All-American is a master technician and viewed by at least one scout as a “genius” when drawing up plays on the white board. Joe Hawley, a 2010 fourth-rounder, fell flat when filling in for 35-year-old Todd McClure last year. Konz could beat out the underwhelming Garrett Johnson at right guard this season before switching to the pivot once McClure retires.
  • DET Guard #73
The Falcons benched RG Garrett Reynolds in favor of Joe Hawley for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis.
It doesn’t appear to be a temporary benching after a terrible first half of the season from Reynolds. “It was something that we determined that we needed to do,” coach Mike Smith said. “I think that it paid off for us.” Reynolds has been reduced to a jumbo tight end in power formations. Hawley had struggled earlier in the season at center, but it was time for a change.
  • FA Tackle #72
Sam Baker moved to right guard in the Falcons’ Week 14 win over the Panthers.
Baker opened the season as the starting left tackle but Will Svitek has since seized that job. Now Baker is playing in a rotation with Joe Hawley and doesn’t sound too happy about it. Baker was benched Sunday after giving up a sack to Antwan Applewhite.
  • FA Guard #65
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution considers Vince Manuwai a “strong darkhorse” for the Falcons’ right guard job.
Cut by the Jaguars last summer after reporting to camp overweight and injured, Manuwai sat out for all of 2011, but has started 105 games since 2003. He’ll be competing with holdovers Garrett Reynolds and Joe Hawley, and draft pick Peter Konz. Manuwai’s familiarity with coach Dirk Koetter should give him a leg up.
  • FA Center #68
NFL suspended Falcons G/C Joe Hawley four games for violating the league’s policy against performance-enhancing substances.
Hawley claims he was busted for using Adderall. He will be ineligible to play in games until Week 16. Hawley is an interior “swing” lineman, backing up at both guard and center. He’s only played 22 snaps of offense this year.
  • FA Center #68
Falcons activated G/C Joe Hawley from the reserve/suspended list.
WR Kevin Cone was sent to injured reserve in a corresponding roster move. A swing lineman, Hawley earned a four-game PED ban in November. He had played only 22 snaps before landing on the suspended list. He’ll provide depth for Atlanta’s playoff run.
  • FA Center #68
ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure expects the team to prioritize re-signing free agent C Joe Hawley.
Hawley, a 2010 fourth-rounder, started the final seven games at center last season in place of a struggling Peter Konz. He had a couple hiccups against the Bills and Panthers but played well overall, not allowing a single sack. Hawley can also play guard. He won’t be expensive for the Falcons to retain.
  • FA Defensive Lineman #98
The Falcons have begun contract talks with free agents DT Corey Peters, DT Jonathan Babineaux, and C/G Joe Hawley.
Babineaux has already expressed a desire to re-sign. Hawley is viewed as one of the Falcons’ top priorities. Peters is coming off a torn Achilles’ and is facing another 4-6 months of rehab. None of the three should be expensive to retain, but the Falcons need to seek upgrades on both lines. They need players who can get to the quarterback and ones that can protect Matt Ryan.

Bucs C Joe Hawley has the early edge to start over Evan Smith.
Hawley outplayed Smith in Tampa’s preseason opener. He graded near the bottom of PFF’s 2015 ratings in 14 starts, but has reportedly had a strong training camp. With the addition of J.R. Sweezy and Ali Marpet entering his second year, the Bucs are counting on improved interior line play this season.
