Chiefs rushers averaged 5.61 yards per carry to the left side of the offensive line compared to 3.25 going right and 3.02 up the middle in 2011.
In other words, Chiefs backs had their greatest success behind LT Branden Albert, who also graded out well as a pass protector in Pro Football Focus’ ratings. First-year starting RG Jon Asamoah excelled as a pass-blocker, but has room to grow in the run game. The Chiefs figure to look for an upgrade on free agent Barry Richardson at right tackle this offseason.
  • Chiefs RG Jon Asamoah will miss Week 11 versus the Bengals after undergoing thumb surgery.
Asamoah has been one of the few bright spot spots on Kansas City’s offense this season, and is coming off an excellent game versus the Steelers. Journeyman fill-in Russ Hochstein is a clear downgrade as a run blocker.
  • Chiefs RG Jon Asamoah (thumb surgery) is expected back for Week 12.
The Chiefs’ offensive line is normally their strong suit, but even that unit struggled in Sunday’s ugly loss to the Bengals. They played without Asamoah and C Ryan Lilja (knee), and then lost LT Brandon Albert to a back injury during the game. “I’m not making excuses about the offensive line, but when you have guys who don’t practice together on a consistent basis, it’s hard for everybody to be on the same page,” coach Romeo Crennel said.
  • Coach Todd Haley praised RG Jon Asamoah’s progression as one of the big reasons for Kansas City’s improved run blocking.
The 68th pick in the 2010 draft, Asamoah is a first-year starter, replacing longtime fan favorite Brian Waters at right guard. “He’s been right at the heart of that,” Haley said. “You’re really seeing him start to come on and pick up where he ended last season.” Pro Football Focus has graded Asamoah as a top-ten pass-blocking guard entering Week 6. He’s also coming off his best run-blocking game of the season against the Colts.
  • FA Running Back
The NFL is expected to review the Week 7 1-yard touchdown that was credited to FB Le’Ron McClain.
McClain fumbled very close to the goal line and guard Jon Asomoah fell on the ball in the end zone. The play wasn’t reviewed and the official scorer credited McClain with the score. The league will take a look and issue an official scoring decision by Wednesday. “It would be nice, so I could say I scored for the first time in my life,” Asomoah said.
  • Chiefs RG Jon Asamoah triggered an escalator in his rookie deal, raising his 2013 salary from $575,000 to $1.323 million.
Asamoah, a 2010 third-round pick, has started 31 of a possible 32 games at right guard for Kansas City over the last two seasons. He’s part of a strong offensive line group, which should make new coach Andy Reid smile. Asamoah projects as an above-average run-blocking guard over the long-term. He’s entering the final year of his contract.
  • Chiefs declared RG Jon Asamoah (calf), ILB Nico Johnson (ankle), WR Chad Hall, S Brad McDougald, LB Josh Martin, DL Allen Bailey, and QB Tyler Bray inactive for Week 1 against the Jaguars.
Geoff Schwartz will start in place of Asamoah. Akeem Jordan will start at inside linebacker next to Derrick Johnson.
  • ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure wonders if the team could show interest in free agent G Jon Asamoah.
Asamoah was drafted by Scott Pioli and the Chiefs with the 68th pick in 2010. Pioli is now the assistant GM in Atlanta. The Falcons badly need help in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Asamoah was billed as a nasty run blocker coming out of Illinois. He seemed to fall out of favor last season in Kansas City. Asamoah is our No. 5 free-agent guard and is widely viewed as a potential steal.
  • According to ESPN’s Adam Caplan, it would be a “small upset” if the Falcons didn’t land free agent OG Jon Asamoah.
Caplan reports Asamoah would start at right guard, bookending LG Justin Blalock. The Falcons need multiple O-Line reinforcements, but securing Asamoah would be a good start. He’s an effective pass blocker and plays with a mean streak. New assistant GM Scott Pioli drafted Asamoah in Kansas City.
  • The NY Daily News reports the Jets will “make a play” for free agent G Jon Asamoah when the league’s three-day negotiating window opens.
Asamoah would be an immediate upgrade to a Jets offensive line that was one of the worst run-blocking units in the league in 2013. Coming off a lackluster season, Asamoah could be one of the biggest steals of free agency, and signing him would be a solid move. Asamoah is our No. 5 free-agent guard.
