Mauga is a special teamer and reserve linebacker. He played 52 defensive snaps before going down. The Jets have signed DT Daniel Muir to take his roster spot. A fourth year undrafted free agent, Mauga will be a restricted free agent in the offseason.

Mauga was set to be a restricted free agent, but he had no chance of getting even the lowest tender. The Jets likely re-upped with him for the league minimum with no guaranteed money. Mauga will battle for a special teams role.

Mauga tore his pectoral in Week 5 and missed the remainder of the season, but he’s expected to be ready for training camp. Largely a special teamer, he’s recorded 44 tackles and an interception in 29 career games.

The Jets are down to three inside linebackers with Nick Bellore behind David Harris and Demario Davis.

It’s a big blow to Kansas City’s defense, which will also be minus OLB Justin Houston (knee) for the first six games. Mauga isn’t a difference maker inside, but he is coming off a solid season as a 14-game starter. Next to Derrick Johnson, Ramik Wilson is listed behind Mauga on the depth chart at inside linebacker.

Mauga reportedly signed a three-year deal prior to the 2015 season, but it is possible those reports were wrong or the contract included a voidable year. Mauga missed all of 2016 with a torn labrum, and he has proven to be a replacement-level starter at best. Going on 30, Mauga likely will not break the bank if he hits the open market.

Mauga was a starter in 2014-15, but missed all of 2016 with a shoulder injury. He languished on the open market until July, and didn’t show enough in the first five weeks of camp to earn a roster spot. Now on the wrong side of 30, Mauga’s career could be winding down.
