R.I.P. to the Ben Sauls trade candidate era, which lasted about 50 minutes. Michigan redshirt freshman DE Julius Welschof made the cut for Bruce Feldman’s list of the top athletic freaks in college football.
Welschof (6'6/275) is ranked 31st on Feldman’s list, and he’s set to make his college football debut after redshirting in 2018. The former champion moguls skier recorded a broad jump of 10 feet, 7 inches according to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, and he continues to make progress when it comes to turning that raw athleticism into production. “The thing he’s starting to understand is that there’s a sense of violence in the game of football that he’s now starting to figure out,” Michigan DC Don Brown told Feldman when discussing the redshirt freshman from Germany.

Michigan freshman DE Julius Welschof is ranked 37th on Bruce Feldman of The Athletic’s “freaks” to watch in 2018.
Welschof is a native of Munich, Germany, and the 6-foot-6, 253-pound defender has shown fascinating athleticism already -- although little of it involves playing on the gridiron. Still, he reportedly can do backflips on skis, and his 40 yard dash times have been in the 4.6 range. Michigan will be able to let Welschof develop -- expect a redshirt in 2018 -- but with that kind of athleticism, he could be an impact player by the time his Wolverines’ career is over.

Michigan signed three-star 2018 DE Julius Welschof, previously a Georgia Tech verbal commit.
Welschof (6'6/248) had initially committed to Georgia Tech at the end of October. A native of Munich, Germany, the defensive end got his first taste of Michigan back during the team’s much-publicized offseason trip to Rome. While he’s still understandably raw on the technical level, Welschof offers tantalizing athletic upside. He’s been timed at 4.55 seconds in the 40-yard dash. A redshirt may well be in the offing for the 2018 season simply given that there’s still much work to do on a developmental level.
