Top Japanese hurler Kazumi Saito is scheduled for surgery Wednesday to repair a damaged rotator cuff and will miss the start of the season.
There was some talk about Saito being posted this winter, but any possibility of that was ruined when shoulder problems limited him to 72 1/3 innings. It’s possible he’ll come over next year if he can rebuild his value in the second half of this season. However, this news would seem to make it a whole lot less likely.

Right-hander Kazumi Saito re-signed with the Softbank Hawks for 2009, taking a 50 million yen paycut after missing last season following rotator cuff surgery.
Saito’s rehab, a portion of which took place in Arizona, hasn’t gone as well as hoped, and he may miss the start of another season. Before the shoulder problems crept up, Saito was talked about as a possibility to come to the U.S. this winter. Now any such plans are on indefinite hold.
