Alex Cobb will undergo season-ending hip surgery.
Cobb never quite turned the corner in his rehabilitation process working his way back from persistent hip issues. This feels like the end of the road for the 37-year-old veteran, who signed a one-year, $15 million contract with Detroit last offseason.

Alex Cobb tossed three hitless innings with four strikeouts for Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.
Cobb, trying to come back from hip problems, averaged just 90.8 mph with his sinker in the game, and all of his pitches were down 3-4 mph from last year. What he had was still good enough to retire Triple-A hitters, but he’ll probably need a bit more zip on his pitches to enjoy any major league success.

Alex Cobb pitched a pair of hitless innings for Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.
Cobb struck out three and walked two while throwing 45 pitches. Rehabbing a hip injury, he’ll probably make two more starts in the minors before the Tigers consider adding him to their rotation.

Alex Cobb (hip) allowed one run (zero earned) on two hits in two innings for High-A West Michigan on Sunday.
Cobb also struck out two and walked one. Reports on his hip mobility were good, and it seems likely that he will be moved to a higher level in the organization for a start this week.

Alex Cobb (hip) struck out four and allowed one run over two innings on Tuesday in a minor league rehab start for High-A West Michigan.
Cobb threw 31 pitches (18 strikes) in his first rehab outing. He’s been out all season battling lingering issues in both of his hips. The 37-year-old has a shot at making it to Detroit by late August or early September, if he manages to avoid any further setbacks.

Alex Cobb (hip) will make a minor league rehab start on Tuesday for High-A West Michigan.
Cobb has been out all season battling lingering issues in both of his hips. The 37-year-old veteran’s odds of making it to Detroit seem a bit low at the moment, but he’s got a shot to contribute at some point by late August or early September, if he manages to avoid any further setbacks.

Alex Cobb (hip) is close to resuming his minor league rehab assignment.
The 37-year-old right-hander has missed the entire season due to issues with both of his hips, but he now feels like he needs just one more bullpen session before he’ll be ready to head out on a second minor league rehab assignment. His last rehab stint lasted three starts and 6 1/3 innings before he was ultimately shut down over lingering hip issues. At this point, anything the Tigers get from him this season would be a bonus.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Alex Cobb is still dealing with hip inflammation.
It’s been a trying few months for Cobb, who threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, as he continues to try to work his way back from issues in both hips. Hinch added that Cobb is still symptomatic and that his body is simply failing him right now. The 37-year-old veteran starter will be racing the clock to make it to Detroit before the end of the regular season. We’ve reached the point where he can’t really afford any additional setbacks.

Alex Cobb (hip) received a cortisone injection on Friday to combat inflammation in his left hip.
The 37-year-old hurler is working his way back from a right hip injury and now it looks like his other hip is causing him problems as well. The perils of growing old. They’ll wait a few days to see how he responds to that before resuming his minor league rehab assignment.

Alex Cobb (hip) allowed one run on one hit in two innings for Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.
Cobb also walked three and struck out two. He threw just 26 of his 49 pitches for strikes. He’ll likely need at least two more starts at this rate, unless the Tigers feel like calling him up to form a piggyback situation with Sawyer Gipson-Long, whose innings are being limited while returning from surgery.
