Nationals optioned LHP Andrew Alvarez to Triple-A Rochester.
The 26-year-old was solid in spring training, allowing two runs on five hits in nine innings while striking out 11 and walking five. He also posted a solid 2.31 ERA in 23 1/3 innings with the Nationals in 2025. He will head to Triple-A to continue to work on refining his command, but he should make MLB starts this season.

Andrew Alvarez pitched well during Sundays’ Grapefruit League start against the Astros, allowing just one hit over four scoreless frames.
The 26-year-old southpaw piled up five strikeouts on the day and didn’t allow a free pass. The lone baserunner against him came on a two-out double off the bat of Yordan Alvarez in the opening inning. Alvarez got six swings and misses on 41 pitches on the afternoon, posting a terrific CSW of 41 percent. If he keeps this up, he’s going to pitch himself into the Nationals’ rotation mix to start the season.

Andrew Alvarez allowed no runs while throwing 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts in a start against Atlanta on Wednesday.
Alvarez did allow three walks, and only 42 of 83 pitches landed for strikes for the 26-year-old. He was still effective while allowing just a pair of hits, but wasn’t able to pitch deep enough to qualify for the win. Alvarez ends his 2025 season with a 2.31 ERA, and he’ll compete for a roster spot with Washington come spring training in 2026.

Andrew Alvarez lasted only 3 1/3 innings and gave up six runs — four earned — in a loss to the Mets on Friday.
Alvarez didn’t have much luck in taking his first loss in four big-league starts. The 26-year-old, who struck out four and walked one, gave up seven hits even though only three of the 12 balls in play against him came with xBAs over .300. This leaves him with a 2.84 ERA through 19 innings. He’s due make his last start Wednesday against the Braves.

Andrew Alvarez tossed six scoreless innings with five strikeouts in a no-decision against the Pirates on Saturday.
Alvarez was dominant against the Pirates on Saturday, tossing six shutout innings. He scattered three hits and one walk while collecting five strikeouts. The 26-year-old left-hander has allowed just two runs with an 11/6 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings across three starts. He’ll look to keep it going against the Mets in New York on Friday.

Andrew Alvarez yielded two runs in 4 2/3 innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Cubs.
Making his second big-league start, Alvarez was able to keep the Nationals in the game today, but he had just two strikeouts and three walks, and eight of the 15 balls in play against him were hit hard. He’ll probably finish the season in the rotation regardless of his performance, but it will determine whether he sticks on the 40-man roster this winter. He’ll face the Pirates next weekend.

Andrew Alvarez was victorious in his MLB debut Monday, allowing just one hit over five scoreless frames as part of a 2-0 win over the Marlins.
Alvarez didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. The 26-year-old southpaw also walked a batter in the fifth, but he managed to pitch out of trouble to finish off his fantastic debut. Believe it or not, he became the first Nationals rookie to pitch five scoreless innings in his major league debut. Alvarez struck out four and walked a pair on the day, logging eight swinging strikes in his 81 pitches. While not considered a top prospect, Alvarez got the call on Monday after putting up a 4.10 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 114/52 K/BB ratio over 123 innings in 25 starts at Triple-A this year. At best, he could make his presence known as rotation depth going into 2026.

Nationals selected the contract of LHP Andrew Alvarez from Triple-A Rochester.
The 26-year-old southpaw is set to make his big league debut on Monday afternoon against the Marlins. Alvarez has struggled to a 4.10 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 114/52 K/BB ratio over 123 innings in 25 starts at Triple-A Rochester this season. He’s not a recommended streaming option for Monday’s start against the Fish.

Andrew Alvarez will be called up to start on Monday against the Marlins.
Alvarez receives the call to replace an injured MacKenzie Gore in Washington’s rotation. The unheralded 26-year-old southpaw has recorded a pedestrian 21.5 percent strikeout rate and 4.10 ERA across 123 innings (25 starts) this season for Triple-A Rochester. It’s a decent matchup right out of the gate, but we’re recommending a wait-and-see approach as he breaks into the big leagues.
