Andrew Alvarez was victorious in his MLB debut Monday, allowing just one hit over five scoreless frames as part of a 2-0 win over the Marlins.
Alvarez didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. The 26-year-old southpaw also walked a batter in the fifth, but he managed to pitch out of trouble to finish off his fantastic debut. Believe it or not, he became the first Nationals rookie to pitch five scoreless innings in his major league debut. Alvarez struck out four and walked a pair on the day, logging eight swinging strikes in his 81 pitches. While not considered a top prospect, Alvarez got the call on Monday after putting up a 4.10 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 114/52 K/BB ratio over 123 innings in 25 starts at Triple-A this year. At best, he could make his presence known as rotation depth going into 2026.
