Carson Kelly walloped a three-run homer as a pinch-hitter to power the Cubs past the Mets 4-2 on Saturday.
Kelly batted for designated hitter Moisés Ballesteros after the Mets replaced Freddy Peralta with lefty Brooks Raley in the sixth and hit a 431-foot homer on the first pitch he saw. Kelly is batting .340/.450/.520 with two homers, 10 RBI and 10 walks in 60 plate appearances. Miguel Amaya is doing a nice job, too, hitting .273/.400/.394, but he’s just not gaining any ground in the battle for playing time.

Michael Busch is on the bench for Monday’s series opener against the Phillies.
Busch takes a seat for the second straight contest with Philadelphia ace Cristopher Sánchez toeing the rubber during Monday’s series opener. The 28-year-old first baseman has gotten off to an abysmal start, hitting .135 (7-for-52) with zero homers and three RBI through 15 games. Carson Kelly takes over at first base to open the game. It’s not quite time to panic, but Busch could be limited to facing righties almost exclusively until he gets back on track.

Carson Kelly went 2-for-5 with a walk-off single to beat the Pirates on Sunday.
With the score tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Kelly scorched a “single” that would have been an extra-base hit if the runner at third wasn’t the winner. The 31-year-old has swung a nice stick to begin the year with a slash of .308/.426/.385, and he gets to call himself the hero of this Cubs’ comeback win as well.

Miguel Amaya is batting ninth and playing designated hitter against the Guardians on Friday.
Amaya has started to see some time at DH against lefties, which is a good sign for how the Cubs feel about his bat. The bad news is that he’s hit ninth in every game he’s appeared in this year. Amaya, off to a .375/.444/.750 start with a homer in his first nine plate appearances, probably deserves to cut into Carson Kelly’s playing time more than he did last year. We’re skeptical it actually happens. Kelly is batting cleanup against LHP Joey Cantillo.

Miguel Amaya hit a pair of solo homers for the Cubs’ only runs Friday against the A’s.
With a .318/.400/.591 line, Amaya has had a nice spring, but he still hasn’t made up any ground on Carson Kelly, who has come in at .364/.417/.727 to date. Kelly figures to get the majority of the playing time behind the plate for Cubs, though both probably rank among MLB’s top 30 catchers at this point.

Carson Kelly went 1-for-3 and cranked a two-run homer as the Cubs throttled the Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon in spring training action.
The 31-year-old backstop victimized Ryan Thompson in the fifth inning, belting an 0-1 slider for a two-run blast to left that extended the Diamondbacks’ lead to 7-1. That would be his only hit in three at-bats on the day. For the spring, Kelly is now hitting .267 (4-for-15) with a pair of homers and four RBI.

Michael Busch is at first base and leading off Thursday’s must-win NLDS Game 4 showdown against the Brewers.
Chicago will attempt to stave off elimination for the second straight contest at Wrigley Field by rolling out the exact same lineup, which features Busch in the leadoff spot to face Brewers ace Freddy Peralta. The 27-year-old slugger blasted a solo homer — his third postseason round-tripper — in the Cubs’ pivotal Game 3 win. Here’s the full lineup: Busch (1B), Nico Hoerner (2B), Kyle Tucker (DH), Seiya Suzuki (RF), Ian Happ (LF), Carson Kelly (C), Pete Crow-Armstrong (CF), Dansby Swanson (SS) and Matt Shaw (3B).
  • CHC Designated Hitter #3
Justin Turner is at first base and leading off Monday’s NLDS Game 2 matchup against the Brewers.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell will shake things up with veteran Justin Turner leading off, while Michael Busch starts on the bench. Lefty opener Aaron Ashby will take the ball for Milwaukee to kick off the contest before Quinn Priester enters in a bulk relief role. Here’s the full lineup: Turner (1B), Nico Hoerner (2B), Kyle Tucker (DH), Seiya Suzuki (RF), Ian Happ (LF), Carson Kelly (C), Pete Crow-Armstring (CF), Dansby Swanson (SS) and Matt Shaw (3B).

Seiya Suzuki is starting in right field and batting cleanup for Saturday’s NLDS Game 1 matchup against the Brewers.
Suzuki has been bumped up to the cleanup spot to face Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, with Ian Happ moved down a couple spots, after going 3-for-11 with one homer and a pair of doubles in Chicago’s Wild Card Series victory over San Diego. The 31-year-old corner outfielder finished the season with an impressive power surge and is clearly building some momentum heading into fantasy drafts next spring. Here’s the full lineup: Michael Busch (1B), Nico Hoerner (2B), Kyle Tucker (DH), Suzuki (RF), Happ (LF), Carson Kelly (C), Pete Crow-Armstrong (CF), Dansby Swanson (SS) and Matt Shaw (3B).

Carson Kelly went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in a 3-2 win over the Braves on Wednesday.
Kelly broke the seal for the Cubs’ lineup with his solo shot after Braves’ starter Chris Sale struck out eight of the first 12 batters he faced. That gave him four home runs in his last seven games as he closes out what’s been the best offensive season of his career to this point with 17 homers and a .799 OPS.
