Chris Murphy worked two innings while allowing a run in a Cactus League start against the Athletics on Saturday.
Murphy has worked exclusively in relief in the majors, but the 27-year-old could get stretched out either as a potential starting option or a multi-inning bullpen arm. While he’s been effective as a reliever, fantasy managers should look elsewhere even if he did somehow get a starting gig.

White Sox acquired LHP Chris Murphy from the Red Sox for C Ronny Hernández.
Murphy heads to Chicago after registering a serviceable 3.12 ERA across 34 2/3 innings over 23 appearances in low-leverage duty for the Red Sox this past season. Boston clearly feels that they had some superior options coming up through their system which is why they made the decision to move on from Murphy and a couple other relievers over the past few hours.

Red Sox optioned LHP Chris Murphy to the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.
Murphy heads to Florida to remain part of Boston’s break glass in case of emergency crew heading into the postseason. The 27-year-old lefty wraps up the regular season with a solid 3.12 ERA across 34 2/3 innings over 23 appearances in low-leverage duty.

Red Sox recalled LHP Chris Murphy from Triple-A Worcester.
Murphy is able to be recalled just two days after being demoted to the minors because Brennan Bernardino was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained lat. Murphy will likely be a middle-inning option while he’s with Boston.

Red Sox optioned LHP Chris Murphy to Triple-A Worcester.
Murphy, 27, gets the boot from the active roster with Kyle Harrison brought up from Worcester in a corresponding move. Murphy could be back before the end of 2025, but there’s obviously no guarantee with less than three weeks to go in the regular season.

Red Sox recalled LHP Chris Murphy from Triple-A Worcester.
As anticipated, he’ll take the place of the injured Jordan Hicks (shoulder) in the Red Sox’ bullpen. Murphy has done a nice job in 14 appearances for the Red Sox this season, posting a 3.05 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 19/10 K/BB ratio across 20 2/3 innings of work. He’ll give manager Alex Cora another option to deploy in the middle innings.

Jordan Hicks is going on the injured list due to a shoulder injury.
Chris Murphy is set to replace him in the Boston bullpen. Hicks gave up four runs while getting just one out last night against the Guardians. He has an 8.20 ERA in 21 appearances for the Red Sox.

Red Sox optioned LHP Chris Murphy to Triple-A Worcester.
Murphy had a 3.05 ERA in 20 2/3 innings, but control had been an issue. To go along with 10 walks, he had plunked five batters in his 14 appearances.

Red Sox activated LHP Chris Murphy from the 60-day injured list.
The 27-year-old southpaw has finally worked his way back from last April’s Tommy John surgery and is ready to contribute to the Red Sox’ bullpen. Luis Guerrero (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move on Saturday to free up a spot in the team’s bullpen.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #72
Red Sox LHP Chris Murphy (elbow) is nearing a rehab stint.
Murphy had Tommy John surgery in April of last year and has already built up to three innings in his live bullpen sessions. The Red Sox believe he “is on the verge of returning to actual games,” and Murphy has shown velocity readings that surpass “anything displayed prior to the injury.” The Red Sox could use a more impactful left-handed reliever, so there’s a chance Murphy’s return timeline could be expedited if he were to transition to the bullpen.
