Astros signed RHP Christian Roa to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.
Roa was a second-round pick for the Reds in 2020 and was with the team until he hurt his shoulder in 2024, and the team tried to sneak him through waivers. The Marlins claimed him, and he pitched to a 2.83 ERA in 60 1/3 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville last year. Roa elected minor league free agency at the end of the season and will now try to work his way into the Astros’ bullpen plans.

Marlins sent RHP Christian Roa and INF Jack Winkler outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Roa, a former Reds prospect, pitched three scoreless innings for the Marlins and had a 2.83 ERA in 60 1/3 innings for Jacksonville last season. Both he and Winkler have been outrighted before, so they can become free agents.

Marlins optioned RHP Christian Roa to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Roa retreats to the minors with reliever Tyler Phillips back from paternity leave for Tuesday’s game against the Rockies.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #82
Marlins recalled RHP Christian Roa from Triple-A Jacksonville.
Roa made his major-league debut last weekend against the Phillies. He joins Miami’s bullpen mix for Saturday’s game against the Tigers with Tyler Phillips heading out on paternity leave.

Marlins optioned RHP Christian Roa to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Roa heads back to the minors to make room for starter Janson Junk after tossing two scoreless frames on Saturday against the Phillies in his major-league debut. The 26-year-old righty figures to return at some point in the final few weeks and will likely operate in long relief.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #82
Marlins selected the contract of RHP Christian Roa from Triple-A Jacksonville.
Roa receives his first call up to the big leagues after posting a strong 2.83 ERA and 61/28 K/BB ratio across 57 1/3 innings over 47 appearances for Triple-A Louisville this season. The unheralded 26-year-old righty, who was a second-round pick in the pandemic-impacted 2020 MLB Draft, figures to operate in middle relief situations.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #86
Marlins sent RHP Christian Roa outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.
The 25-year-old right-hander was claimed off of waivers from the Reds on November 1. Roa finished the 2024 season on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder sprain after posting a 5.55 ERA and a 47/30 K/BB ratio across 48 2/3 innings at Triple-A Louisville. The move frees up another spot on the Marlins’ 40-man roster — which is now down to 37 players — as they attempt to decide who to protect for the upcoming Rule 5 draft.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #86
Marlins claimed RHP Christian Roa off waivers from the Reds.
Roa was not reinstated from the 60-day injured list by Cincinnati, so that placed him on waivers and Miami will take the chance with the right-hander. Before suffering a right shoulder sprain, Roa posted a 5.55 ERA and 47/30 K/BB ratio in 48 2/3 innings with Triple-A Louisville. He’ll be a depth piece for Miami, and will be at risk of being on the waiver wire if/when the Marlins need 40-man roster room.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #94
Reds recalled RHP Christian Roa and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder sprain.
The move opens a spot on the 40-man for Julian Aguiar. Roa got hurt earlier this month and will miss the rest of the season. He had a 5.55 ERA and a 47/30 K/BB ratio in 48 2/3 innings for Triple-A Louisville, so he’s a candidate to be bumped from the roster this winter.
  • CIN Relief Pitcher #65
Reds optioned RHP Casey Legumina, RHP Christian Roa, RHP Carson Spiers, OF Rece Hinds and OF Jacob Hurtubise to Triple-A Louisville.
Legumina and Spiers maybe had slight chances of cracking the Reds’ pen, but it would have taken awfully impressive springs. Those two have the best chances of helping the team this year, though it’s possible Hurtubise’s left-handed bat could make him useful as a reserve outfielder if a need arises.
