Mariners sent OF Curtis Washington Jr. outright to High-A Everett.

The 26-year-old was optioned out on Wednesday and was also designated for assignment. He passed through waivers unclaimed though and will continue to function as extra outfield depth for the Mariners in the lower minors.

Mariners optioned OF Curtis Washington Jr. to High-A Everett.

Washington Jr. was called up because he was geographically the closest outfield prospect who could make it in time for the game last night. The 26-year-old will head back to the lower minors, but it was likely a very special day for him.

Mariners selected the contract of OF Curtis Washington Jr. from High-A Everett.

Washington receives the emergency last-minute call-up to sit on Seattle’s bench during Tuesday’s series opener against the Orioles with Randy Arozarena (hamstring) hitting the injured list and both Josh Naylor (shin, wrist) and Luke Raley (back) unavailable due to injuries. The 26-year-old outfielder will head back to the minors with Connor Joe coming up from Triple-A Tacoma prior to Wednesday’s contest. Even if he never makes it back in the future, Washington can always say that he put on a big-league uniform at least once in his career.

The Mariners are placing Randy Arozarena (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list, reports The Seattle Times’ Adam Jude.

Arozarena underwent an MRI that revealed hamstring inflammation and isn’t expected to require a lengthy absence. Unfortunately, the Mariners are also missing Josh Naylor (shin, wrist) and Luke Raley (back) due to injuries and can’t really afford to play with a one-man bench. The 31-year-old will get some extra time off to rest and recover. It’ll be Curtis Washington Jr. coming up from High-A Everett to take a seat on Seattle bench in case of emergency.
