Marlins prospect Dillon Head will undergo season-ending hip surgery on Friday.
It’s technically a left hip femoral acetabular impingement surgical procedure, per MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola. The 19-year-old top prospect, who was acquired earlier this season from the Padres as part of the massive haul for Luis Arraez, is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

Marlins acquired OF Dillon Head from the Padres in a five-player trade.
Head is the top prospect heading — pun kind of intended — to the Marlins, although he has scuffled in the first month of the year with a .237/.317/.366 slash with Low-A Lake Elsinore. The 2023 first-round selection is one of the fastest prospects in baseball, and he has a chance to hit for a high average thanks to his wheels and a line-drive swing. This is not a fast-track prospect, but Head does have the ability to be ever-so-relevant in fantasy leagues in the coming years.

Craig Mish of Sportsgrid reports that the Marlins will receive Dillon Head, Woo Suk-Go and Nathan Martorella from the Padres in return for Luis Arraez.
Head is the prize for the Marlins in the trade. The 19-year-old outfielder was the Padres’ first-round selection (25th overall) from the 2023 draft. He’s at least a couple of years away from helping out at the big league level but projects as an impact five-category contributor. Suk-Go should immediately step in and help in the big league bullpen. It’s unusual to see a team wave the white flag on the season in the first week of May, but nothing that the Marlins do should be that surprising anymore.

Padres signed first-round pick OF Dillon Head.
Jim Callis of MLB.com reports that Head will receive a signing bonus of $2.8 million, which is a bit under the slot value of $3,165,400 for the 25th pick in the draft. The 18-year-old outfielder could develop into a five-category contributor in fantasy leagues, but is going to need a few years of seasoning in the minors before he gets an opportunity with the Padres.

Padres selected Homewood-Flossmoor HS, (Flossmoor, IL) OF Dillon Head with the 25th pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.
The Clemson commit is a superb athlete who can handle center field and will be a speedster from the jump, with many different scouts dropping 80-grade speed on him. Can he hit? The lack of consensus on that is the reason he wasn’t a top-10 caliber pick on most boards. If he can harness everything and put together a 50-55 grade bat, Head has a chance to contribute in all five categories in fantasy. Just don’t count on it happening any time soon, as he’s likely to need a bit of extra seasoning.
