Padres placed RHP Germán Márquez on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 2, with right forearm nerve inflammation.
The expectation had been that Matt Waldron would get bumped from the Padres’ rotation to accommodate the return of Griffin Canning on Sunday, but with Márquez heading to the injured list, he’ll get to stick around a bit longer. No word yet on the severity of the injury or how long they expect the 31-year-old hurler to be shelved for.

Germán Márquez surrendered seven runs in five innings Friday in a loss to the White Sox.
Márquez walked three and gave up a three-run homer to Munetaka Murakami as part of a six-run second inning. In all, he issued five walks for the fifth time in 206 career starts. The loss takes his ERA to 5.76, and he could be vulnerable to losing his spot if the Padres add both Griffin Canning and Lucas Giolito in the coming weeks. He’s due to face the Giants on Wednesday.

Germán Márquez turned in six innings of four-run ball for a win against the D-backs in Mexico City on Saturday.
Giving up four runs over six innings in Mexico City definitely unofficially rates as quality start, much like it did in Márquez’s old home in Colorado. The win makes him 3-1 with a 4.38 ERA and a 17/7 K/BB in 24 1/3 innings. He still doesn’t make much sense in shallow leagues, but he wouldn’t be the worst option next week at home against the White Sox.

Germán Márquez didn’t factor into the decision Saturday despite firing 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Angels on Saturday.
Márquez allowed just two hits — doubles by Mike Trout and Zack Neto — and he struck out five with two walks. That’s the second time in three starts that the right-hander hasn’t allowed a run, and his ERA over his first month in his first season with the Padres is now 3.86. Considering how awful Márquez was over the past two season, it’s understandable to have skepticism. It’s probably the right call. That being said, Márquez once was one of the rare successful Rockies’ starters, and maybe the grass was greener on the other side. He gets the Diamondbacks next Saturday.

Germán Márquez allowed four runs over five innings, but still was credited with a win Saturday over the Rockies.
In his first start against his former employer, Márquez gave up three homers and reminded fans of the Rockies why he’s no longer employed there. He was still able to get the win because his offense gave him a bushel of runs, and he was able to strike out five and walk a pair. Márquez has alternated bad outings with one good one sandwiched between, and he shouldn’t be trusted for Friday’s scheduled bout against the Angels.

Germán Márquez scattered six hits over five innings in the Padres’ 5-0 shutout of the Pirates on Monday.
Ron Marinaccio and David Morgan finished the shutout. It’s Márquez’s first win as a Padre and first overall in 13 starts since last June 18. He generated 13 whiffs tonight after notching just two in his first start against the Giants. We doubt he’ll be mixed-league relevant at any point this season, but he seemed serviceable tonight, and he’s probably ahead of Walker Buehler on the depth chart right now. He’ll next face his old buds the Rockies in a home start Saturday.

German Márquez allowed four runs with one strikeout over three innings in a loss against the Giants on Tuesday.
Márquez surrendered a solo homer to Willy Adames on the second pitch of the game. A walk and two hits brought two more runs in to score for the Giants before Márquez got out of the inning. He then stranded the bases loaded in the second. Matt Chapman sent one over the left field wall for a solo blast in the third. Márquez would be done after three frames at 65 pitches, giving up eight total hits. The Padres were hoping to get something out of the 31-year-old right-hander in his first season out of Colorado. That’s looking unlikely. He lines up for his next start next Monday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Germán Márquez struck out eight and surrendered one run over 4 2/3 innings on Monday against the Mariners.
Márquez appears penciled into San Diego’s season-opening rotation after another strong outing where he piled up a staggering 22 swinging strikes against a watered-down Seattle lineup. The 31-year-old’s track record away from Coors Field suggests he could be a decent streaming option in deeper fantasy leagues.

Germán Márquez posted nine strikeouts and allowed three runs over five innings on Tuesday against the Mariners.
Márquez generated 13 swinging strikes and finished with a near-elite 35 percent CSW in this one as he continues to build a strong case for cracking San Diego’s season-opening rotation. His spot appears virtually locked up with fellow veteran Joe Musgrove (elbow) heading to the injured list at the outset of the year. He gave up only three hits with homers by Luke Raley and Colt Emerson accounting for most of the damage against him.

Germán Márquez walked four and surrendered six runs in 1 2/3 innings against the Royals on Thursday.
Márquez certainly isn’t overpowering anyone at this point of his career, so the free baserunners just can’t happen. Tonight, he put five guys on, including one that he hit with a pitch, and paid a very obvious price. He seemed like a good bet to be the Padres’ fifth starter when he signed last month, but the team should be able to do better.
