Astros designated RHP J.P. France for assignment.
France did great work as a 28-year-old rookie for the Astros in 2023, going 11-6 with a 3.83 ERA, but he lasted just five starts in 2024 before requiring shoulder surgery and he struggled with his command after returning last summer, pitching just four innings in the majors. He’s making the minimum and he has an option year left, so he should have suitors, even if he doesn’t offer much upside.

The Astros are acquiring Kai-Wei Teng from the Giants for Jancel Villareal, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.
For the Giants, this is about freeing up a spot on the 40-man to make room for Harrison Bader, and in return, they’ll get a 21-year-old catcher. The Astros will DFA J.P. France to make room for Teng.

Astros recalled RHP J.P. France from Triple-A Sugar Land.
France will operate as a multi-inning reliever out of Houston’s bullpen for the final two weeks of the season. The 30-year-old righty hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since last summer due to shoulder surgery.

The Astros are calling up J.P. France to work out of the pen, sources tell The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.
France’s next appearance for the Astros will be his first since July 2024 shoulder capsule surgery. He has a 6.38 ERA in 24 innings over seven appearances for Triple-A Sugar Land.

Astros activated RHP J.P. France from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land.
The 30-year-old hurler has been working his way back from shoulder surgery. He has logged 13 innings over five minor league rehab starts so far, posting an 8.31 ERA, 2.15 WHIP and a 15/13 K/BB ratio. He’ll continue to work through things in the minor leagues before potentially joining the Astros at some point in September.

J.P. France (shoulder) allowed three runs on five hits in two innings for Double-A Corpus Christi on Sunday.
France struck out three and walked one while throwing 30 of his 48 pitches for strikes. The 30-year-old is making his way back from shoulder capsule surgery in the off-season and could move his rehab assignment to Triple-A for his next start.

J.P. France (shoulder) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the Florida Complex League on Monday.
The right-hander allowed two hits and walked one but struck out two in his first outing of the season. France has been out since last June with a shoulder injury that required surgery, so it’s nice to see him simply healthy and on the mound in a competitive game. He will likely move his rehab up to a higher level of the organization, but could need as many as four more starts before he becomes an option for the Astros.

J.P. France (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League on Monday.
France has been out all season after undergoing shoulder surgery to address a torn right shoulder capsule last June. The 30-year-old will likely require a long build-up, but he and Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia are all beginning their road back from injuries to provide some depth to the Astros’ rotation.

J.P. France threw a live bullpen session before Friday’s game against the Cubs.
France is working his way back from the capsule tear in his right shoulder. He’ll need to make a few rehab starts before he can join the Houston rotation, but he could be an option not long after the All-Star break.

J.P. France (shoulder) will face hitters on Friday in a live batting practice session.
France has been on the shelf since the end of spring training recovering from last July’s surgery to repair a capsule tear in his right shoulder. The 30-year-old righty figures to rejoin Houston’s rotation at some point in the second half, most likely after next month’s All-Star break following a series of minor league rehab starts to build up his pitch count and stamina.
