Yankees acquired LHP Joel Valdez and 3B T.J. Rumfield from the Phillies for RHP Nick Nelson and C Donny Sands.
Valdez represents a long-term lottery ticket for the Yankees, who needed to clear several 40-man roster spots to protect some of their highly-regarded prospects from next month’s Rule 5 Draft. The 21-year-old left-hander registered a 1.63 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 54/16 K/BB ratio across 55 1/3 innings in the Dominican Summer League this past season.
