The Astros are hiring Ethan Katz as a pitching coach, sources tell The Athletic.
Katz spent the last five years as the White Sox’s pitching coach before being dropped earlier in the offseason. He’ll be replacing Bill Murphy in Houston after Murphy left to go to Pittsburgh, and he’ll presumably work in tandem with fellow pitching coach Joshua Miller. For what it’s worth, Katz and free agent Lucas Giolito are very good friends, if that’s something the Astros want to pursue.

The Astros will not bring back hitting coach Alex Cintrón next season, The Athletic reports.
MLB.com’s Brian McTaggert says fellow hitting coach Troy Snitker. is also out. Cintrón and Snitker spent the last seven years sharing duties for what has typically been one of the league’s best offenses. That changed this year with Kyle Tucker gone and Yordan Alvarez being limited to 48 games. The Astros ended up scoring 4.23 runs per game, placing them 21st in the majors.

Astros general manager Dana Brown and manager Joe Espada will return next season, according to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.
McTaggart adds that both are under contract for next season and any speculation regarding the immediate future in Houston can be put to bed entering a critical offseason for the franchise. Espada guided the Astros to an 87-75 record in his second season at the helm, despite an avalanche of injuries to the pitching side of the ledger. Brown has been at the helm for the past three seasons with Houston missing the postseason this year for the first time since 2016. He’ll oversee a transitional phase for the organization as they try to navigate forward with an aging core and some up-and-coming talent, mostly on the positional side.

Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports that Omar Lopez will become the Astros’ new bench coach.
He’ll take the job vacated by Joe Espada when he was promoted to be the Astros’ manager following Dusty Baker’s retirement. Lopez has spent the past 25 years working in the Astros’ organization — including 12 seasons managing in the minor leagues. He has worked alongside Espada on the big league staff for the past four years in the role of first base coach.

The Astros officially named Joe Espada their new manager on Monday.
It’s the first managerial gig for the 48-year-old. Espada spent the last six years as the team’s bench coach, working with both A.J. Hinch and Dusty Baker. Before that, he played nine seasons as a minor league infielder and coached for the Marlins and Yankees.
  • HOU Bench Coach
Astros bench coach Joe Espada is expected to be named Houston’s manager on Monday, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.
The deal isn’t official but Houston has set a press conference for Monday morning where it is expected that the 48-year-old will be announced as the Astros’ 25th manager in franchise history. Espada has been the Astros bench coach since 2018 and has interviewed for numerous managerial positions over the past few offseasons. Espada has big shoes to fill as the Astros won two World Series championships and made the ALCS the last seven seasons.
  • HOU Bench Coach
The Astros are trying to keep bench coach Joe Espada from interviewing with the Brewers for their managerial opening until they decide on who will replace Dusty Baker.
Espada is a candidate for both jobs. The oddity here is that, as The Athletic’s Chandler Rome reports, Espada’s contract with the Astros expired on Oct. 31, allowing him to do whatever he’d like. Yet GM Dana Brown still said Tuesday that the Brewers were being denied permission to interview in Milwaukee.
  • HOU Bench Coach
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports Astros bench coach Joe Espada is among several candidates for the Brewers’ managerial vacancy.
Rosenthal adds that Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy, Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly, Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough, Astros hitting coach Troy Snitker and former Braves infielder Rickie Weeks are also candidates, according to sources briefed on the club’s thinking. The sudden departure of manager Craig Counsell has opened up a vacancy in Milwaukee and it doesn’t sound like they’ve quite narrowed down their field of potential candidates.
  • HOU General Manager
Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters Wednesday that the club hasn’t started interviewing candidates to replace Dusty Baker.
Brown added that the search to replace Baker, who retired last week after four seasons at the helm in Houston, will be thorough. However, he declined to offer a specific timetable to fill the position. The Astros are expected to interview bench coach Joe Espada, who has been a finalist for other managerial vacancies the last few years. There have been rumblings that the club has expressed interest in Brewers manager Craig Counsell, whose contract is set to expire this week, but it’s unclear whether he’ll interview for the vacancy at this juncture. There should be a list of potential candidates at some point in the coming weeks.
