Cessa

Cessa is a perfectly cromulent Triple-A starter at this stage of his career and has bounced around a couple organizations since his last appearance in the majors last year for the Reds. The 32-year-old journeyman was cut loose by the Royals earlier this month after posting a 3.89 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 29/16 K/BB ratio across 39 1/3 innings (11 appearances, 10 starts) for Triple-A Omaha.

The 31-year-old righty struggled mightily in seven appearances (six starts) last season for the Reds before ultimately bouncing around at the Triple-A level between the Rockies and Nationals to close out the year. He’ll presumably compete in spring training for a spot on Kansas City’s season-opening roster.

Cessa inked a minor league contract with the Nationals back in early July and never wound up reaching the majors in Washington. The 31-year-old righty has spent time in three different organizations this season.

Cessa was released last week by the Rockies after six disastrous outings for Triple-A Albuquerque, but quickly finds an opportunity with another rebuilding club in need of extra starting pitching depth. The Reds had an off-day Thursday and another coming up on Monday, so they’ll use the opportunity to have Cessa pitch as a member of the bullpen. Of course, he’s put up a miserable 9.00 ERA and 2.20 WHIP over six starts this season, so this is also performance-based.
