    Yankees released RHP Marcus Stroman.
Stroman had a 4.55 ERA in six starts since coming off the injured list at the end of June, but his last two outings against the Phillies (4 ER in 3 2/3 IP) and Rays (4 ER in 5 IP) were both pretty rough. This move might have led to some sort of grievance had Stroman had a shot at reaching 140 innings, which would have given him an $18 million player option for 2026, but since he was at just 39, there was no way he was getting there. This means that Cam Schlitter will stay in the rotation following Luis Gil’s return this weekend, but it does leave the Yankees lacking starting pitching depth with no potential for trades going forward. If someone gets hurt, Allan Winans is probably next in line for the rotation.

Marcus Stroman surrendered four runs over five innings on Thursday in a win over the Rays.
Stroman drew the starting assignment for New York’s final game prior to the trade deadline and carried a shutout into the fourth inning before Tampa Bay finally broke through for four runs on five hits, including a two-run double by Taylor Walls with two outs in the frame. He’s scheduled to take the ball on Wednesday against the Rangers at Globe Life Field in his next outing.

Luis Gil (lat) will make another minor league rehab start on Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
It’s expected to be Gil’s final rehab outing before returning to New York’s rotation mix later this week for his season debut. The 27-year-old righty has been out since spring training working his way back from a lat injury. His return means that either Marcus Stroman or rookie Cam Schlittler will be jettisoned from the rotation, unless the Yankees are willing to roll with a six-man mix.

Marcus Stroman was charged with four runs over 3 2/3 innings on Saturday in a loss to the Phillies.
On the heels of his strongest start of the season, Stroman struggled to throw strikes and failed to complete four frames on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. He gave up a run in the opening frame before serving up a third-inning moonshot to Bryce Harper. Things unraveled further in the ensuing inning when he issued four walks, enabling the Phillies tacked on a pair of additional runs. The 34-year-old righty holds a bloated 6.09 ERA and 23/15 K/BB ratio across 34 innings (eight starts) this season. He’ll square off against the Rays on Thursday in his next outing.

Marcus Stroman allowed one run in six innings and got the win in the Yankees’ 4-2 victory over the Braves on Sunday.
Stroman gave up five hits, walked none and struck out four. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 3.00 ERA over his last four starts since he re-joined the Yankees rotation. Stroman has only 12 strikeouts in 21 innings in those four starts. He only has fantasy value in deeper formats at this point in his career and could lose his rotation spot to Luis Gil or a starter the Yankees acquire before the trade deadline. As of now, Stroman is lined up to face the Phillies at home next weekend.

Marcus Stroman yielded two runs in five innings Thursday in a no-decision versus the Mariners.
Stroman’s velocity was a little better tonight, as he averaged 90.6 mph with his sinker. He was still hit fairly hard, but most of the contact was on the ground and he kept the Yankees in the game while they were getting no-hit by Bryan Woo. Stroman did get checked on towards the end of his outing, as it looked like he tweaked his knee running to cover first. However, he was able to remain in after one warmup throw. He ends the first half with a 6.66 ERA in six starts.

Yankees recalled RHP Cam Schlittler from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
This move has been discussed for a few days, but is now official. The 24-year-old has been great this season with a 2.82 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 99/26 K/BB ratio across 76 2/3 innings (15 appearances, 14 starts) between Triple-A and Double-A. He has a high-velocity cut/ride fastball with two good secondaries, but his start on Wednesday against the Mariners will be a big step up in competition. If he performs well, he could remain in the rotation until Luis Gil returns and potentially even keep a spot over Marcus Stroman after that.

Luis Gil (lat) will begin a rehab assignment on Sunday.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Gil will be built up as a starting pitcher, which means he’ll need a handful of starts before pushing for activation. It’s possible he returns in late July, but early August could be more likely. When he does return, he will push either Cam Schlittler or Marcus Stroman out of the rotation.

Marcus Stroman allowed seven hits and three runs with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Friday.
Stroman danced into and out of trouble and gave up tons of loud contact, but still managed to put himself in position to earn the win against his former team. It’s a marvel how he can ever be effective though with practically the least velocity in the entire league. He threw just two pitches over 90 mph in this game and still threw his sinker nearly 70% of the time against right-handed batters. With Clarke Schmidt’s injury, he figures to have a secure spot in this rotation though and lines up to face the Mariners next time out.

Marcus Stroman allowed one run with one strikeout over five innings in a win over the Athletics on Sunday.
Stroman was excellent in his first start for the Yankees since April 11. He kept the A’s off the board through four innings before Willie MacIver took him deep for a solo homer in the fifth. He’d end his day after scattering just two other hits and two walks. The 34-year-old right-hander will look to build off the strong start in a road matchup against the Mets on Friday.
