Padres optioned RHP Alek Jacob and INF Mason McCoy to Triple-A El Paso.
McCoy will probably be the first person bumped from the Padres’ 40-man when they need another spot. Jacob, who has a 4.06 ERA in 51 innings as a major leaguer, had a chance of winning a bullpen spot, but he probably didn’t help his chances by playing for Team Italy. He’ll likely get a look soon enough anyway.
  • SD Shortstop #18
Padres recalled INF Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso.
The 30-year-old infielder will add some emergency depth for the Padres in the wake of Xander Bogaerts landing on the injured list with a fractured foot. Expect him to help share the load at shortstop with Jose Iglesias.
  • SD Shortstop #18
Padres activated INF Mason McCoy from the 10-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A El Paso.
McCoy will remain stationed at Triple-A El Paso after concluding a minor league rehab assignment earlier this week. The 30-year-old utility infielder has been on the shelf since late April due to a left finger sprain.
  • SD Shortstop #18
Padres placed INF Mason McCoy on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 28, with a left pinky finger sprain.
McCoy managed to avoid the injured list for a couple days after dislocating his left pinky finger on Saturday night. It’s unclear whether he’ll have a spot on San Diego’s active roster once he’s ready to return, which means he’s likely ticketed for Triple-A El Paso.
  • SD Shortstop #82
Padres recalled INF Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso.
McCoy has been summoned to take Luis Arraez’s roster spot ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Tigers. The 30-year-old journeyman figures to only be up for a couple days as emergency bench depth. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.
  • SD Shortstop #18
Padres selected the contract of INF Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso.
McCoy was signed as a non-roster invite this winter, but the 29-year-old did enough in the Cactus League to earn a bench spot to begin the season. It’s very unlikely he’ll have enough playing time to earn any kind of fantasy relevancy, and just as unlikely that he’ll hit enough even if he did.
  • SD Shortstop #18
Padres re-signed INF Mason McCoy to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
McCoy was non-tendered as the Padres needed to free up a couple of spots on their 40-man roster in late November, but he’ll rejoin the fray on a minor league pact. The 29-year-old hit just .204/.278/.245 with no homers, three RBI and a 19/5 K/BB ratio over 57 plate appearances with the Padres in 2024.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #77
Padres non-tendered RHP Luis Patiño, RHP Logan Gillaspie, OF Bryce Johnson and INF Mason McCoy.
All of these were easy cuts. Patiño, the former top prospect whom the Padres got back from the White Sox off waivers last winter, underwent Tommy John surgery in May. He’ll almost surely be offered a minor league contract to stick around.
  • SD Shortstop #18
Padres placed INF Mason McCoy on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to September 19, with back inflammation.
McCoy will miss the rest of the regular season even with the backdating. The infielder could return for the postseason, but he may not have earned a spot even if healthy. Nick Ahmed had his contract selected in the corresponding transaction.
  • SD Shortstop #10
Padres selected the contract of INF Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso.
It sounds like McCoy will see regular action at shortstop for the Padres while Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) is on the shelf. The 29-year-old was hitting .260/.329/.382 with five homers, 20 RBI, 25 stolen bases and a 105/39 K/BB ratio over 432 plate appearances at Triple-A El Paso. He’s unlikely to make a major impact from a fantasy perspective.
