Nationals acquired RHP Matt Avery from the Cubs for LHP Ryan Buchter.
Neither is a serious prospect. Avery, 25, roomed with Ryan Zimmerman at Virginia. He had a 4.12 ERA and a 60/39 K/BB ratio in 74 1/3 innings as a reliever between Single-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee last season. Buchter, 21, had a 2.59 ERA in 17 relief appearances between Rookie ball and the Sally League. It’s possible we’ll see Avery in the majors at some point of next year, but he’s unlikely to have success, even as a middle reliever.
