Orioles sent C Maverick Handley outright to Triple-A Norfolk.
Handley will be back with the Orioles as Triple-A catching depth. A defensive-minded backstop, he went 3-for-41 in 16 games in the majors last season. He’s a career .222/.341/.337 hitter over 374 games in the minors.

Orioles designated C Maverick Handley for assignment.
With Adley Rutschman and Gary Sánchez missing time, Handley spent about one-quarter of last season on the Orioles’ roster as a backup catcher and went 3-for-41 with no extra-base hits and 18 strikeouts. He should clear waivers and stick around as depth behind Rutschman and Samuel Basallo.

Orioles optioned C Maverick Handley to Triple-A Norfolk.
Handley heads back to the minors after being up for just one game as a September call-up with Jorge Mateo coming off the injured list.

Orioles recalled C Maverick Handley from Triple-A Norfolk.
Handley will serve as a third catcher until either Adley Rutschmann or Gary Sánchez comes off the injured list. He’s 3-for-41 with no extra-base base and 18 strikeouts during his time in the majors this season.

Orioles activated C Maverick Handley from the 10-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
Handley will remain stationed at Triple-A after spending the last month on the injured list with a right wrist sprain. There’s no room for him in Baltimore with Adley Rutschman and top prospect Samuel Basallo handling the catching duties.

Orioles transferred C Maverick Handley from the 7-day concussion list to the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain.
Handley will remain on the injured list, but it’ll be his wrist rather than a concussion that keeps him from returning to the lineup. The 27-year-old backstop should be back near the start of August if there’s no setbacks in his rehabilitation.

Orioles placed C Maverick Handley on the seven-day concussion injured list.
Handley, who was to back up Gary Sánchez after Adley Rutschman went on the IL with an oblique strain Saturday, was hurt in a collision with Jazz Chisholm Jr. during Sunday’s game against the Yankees. Chadwick Tromp will fill in for him.

Maverick Handley is undergoing “full body” evaluation after being removed from Sunday’s game against the Yankees following a home-plate collision.
Handley was inadvertently knocked completely off his feet on a scary-looking collision with Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. while attempting to field an errant throw up the third-base line during the early stages of Sunday’s game. He’ll be evaluated for a possible concussion in addition to other potential injuries. There should be an update on his status ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Rangers. It’s worth noting that Samuel Basallo wasn’t scratched from Sunday’s lineup at Triple-A Norfolk and is unlikely to be called up as temporary stopgap, despite injuries to both Handley and Adley Rutschman (oblique).

Maverick Handley made an early exit from Sunday’s game against the Yankees in the second inning following a home-plate collision with Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Handley was led up the third-base line to field an off-target throw to the plate, which took him directly into the path of an oncoming Chisholm, resulting in a scary-looking collision. The 27-year-old backstop was clearly shaken up on the play and left with an athletic trainer. He’ll undoubtedly undergo further evaluation and testing for a possible concussion. There should be an update on his status following the contest. It’s an unfortunate development for the Orioles since Handley had just returned to the majors to replace an injured Adley Rutschman. It’s too soon to speculate, but the club would likely have to find some emergency catching depth or consider calling up top prospect Samuel Basallo if Handley winds up missing sigificant time.

Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino said Sunday that Adley Rutschman (oblique) will likely be out through the All-Star break.
Fantasy managers shouldn’t expect Rutschman back until after next month’s Midsummer Classic, which takes place on July 15 in Atlanta. The 27-year-old backstop hit the shelf earlier this weekend for the first time in his career with what Mansolino described as a “mild” left oblique strain. However, he’s still going to miss at least a couple weeks. The frustrating development here is that the Orioles seemingly aren’t considering promoting top prospect Samuel Basallo to fill the void and will instead roll with veteran Gary Sánchez and rookie Maverick Handley as his caddy.
