MLB.com’s Bill Ladson reports Lars Nootbaar (heels) will open the season on the injured list.
Nootbaar has yet to appear in a spring training contest for the Cardinals as he works his way back from offseason surgery on both heels. The 28-year-old corner outfielder’s absence creates a pathway for Nelson Velàzquez to open the year in the big leagues as a temporary stopgap.

Nelson Velázquez went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBI on Sunday afternoon, powering the Cardinals to a 6-3 victory over the Nationals in Grapefruit League play.
The 27-year-old slugger started the scoring with a bang, crushing a 419-foot (109.4 mph EV) three-run blast off of Miles Mikolas in the opening inning. He also tacked on a run-scoring single in the fifth that increased the Cardinals’ edge to 5-3. He’s doing everything in his power to earn a spot on the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster this spring, hitting .333 (11-for-33) with four long balls and nine RBI.

Nelson Velázquez finished 2-for-4 with a homer Friday in the Cardinals’ 10-2 takedown of the Orioles.
Velázquez is 5-for-17 with just one strikeout. He has a realistic shot at a spot on the Cardinals’ bench as a platoon guy against lefties, though it doesn’t help his case that he doesn’t really have much of a positive split against lefties in his career. He’s hit .211/.306/.428 with a 30% strikeout rate versus lefties and .212/.276/.435 with a 28% strikeout rate against righties in his 615 major league plate appearances.

Cardinals signed OF Nelson Velázquez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Velázquez, who hit .212/.286/.433 with 31 homers in 615 plate appearances for the Cubs and Royals from 2022-24, bounced around all over the place last year. The Royals released him from their Triple-A roster in May, at which point he went to Mexico and hit .357/.444/.658 in 49 games. That earned him a minor league contract from the Pirates, and he hit .284/.349/.554 in 18 games at the end of the year for Triple-A Indianapolis. Since then, he’s spent time in both the Dominican and Puerto Rican Winter Leagues. He should have some chance of making the Cardinals as a right-handed platoon option in the outfield corners and at DH, assuming the team doesn’t bring in a veteran option for that role.
  • PIT Left Fielder #17
Pirates signed OF Nelson Velázquez to a minor league contract.
A classic change of scenery candidate, Velázquez was a notable prospect just a couple years ago. He failed to carve out an everyday role in Kansas City, batting .212/.286/.433 with 31 homers and seven steals in 194 games at the major-league level since 2022. Still only 26 years old, he represents a worthwhile dice roll for the rebuilding Pirates as a no-risk lottery ticket.

    Royals released OF Nelson Velázquez.
Velázquez was jettisoned from Kansas City’s 40-man roster back in late March and was hitting .202 through 33 games this season at Triple-A Omaha. The 26-year-old former top prospect has hit .212/.286/.433 with 31 homers and seven steals in 194 games in the majors since 2022. There’s presumably another organization out there willing to roll the dice on his talent.
  • KC 1st Baseman #32
Royals sent INF/OF Nick Pratto and OF Nelson Velázquez outright to Triple-A Omaha.
Pratto and Velázquez were subjected to waivers, but both managed to go unclaimed and will remain with Kansas City. The Royals have cleared three 40-man roster spots with Carlos Hernández being claimed by the Phillies. Pratto and Velázquez will serve as minor league depth in case the Royals have an injury at the major-league level.
  • KC Left Fielder #17
Nelson Velázquez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk as the Royals came back to beat the Reds 11-8 on Thursday.
The Royals scored nine runs off Bryan Shaw and John Murphy in the eighth to win this one. Velázquez is hitting .208/.345/.250 in 29 plate appearances this spring. The Royals will likely carry him initially, since he’s out of options, but he’ll be limited to playing against lefties unless he can force their hand.
  • KC Left Fielder #17
Nelson Velázquez was removed from Wednesday’s game with a calf cramp.
Velázquez suffered the injury while attempting to track down a fly ball near the right-field wall. The 26-year-old corner outfielder was 1-for-2 prior to exiting and is batting .125 (2-for-16) this spring in Cactus League play.
  • KC Left Fielder #17
Royals optioned OF Nelson Velázquez to Triple-A Omaha.
Velázquez was hitting .200/.274/.366 in 230 plate appearances. He’s cut back on the strikeouts a bit this year, but his power production has also dwindled, as his hard-hit rate had come in at 38%. Last year, he was at 48%. He’ll get another chance if he can fire in Triple-A, but with his lack of defensive value, he needs to provide a lot of offense to justify his spot.
