MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that the Braves will designate starter Mike Foltynewicz for assignment. Chad Sobotka will take his spot on the active roster. Foltynewicz averaged below 90 MPH on his fastball during Monday night’s start against the Rays. He allowed six runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.

Braves manager Brian Snitker said, “After the last couple outings in (Summer Camp), we wanted to give it a go here and it was the same. We didn’t see enough increase in the velocity. That’s who he’s been. He’s been a stuff guy for the entire time we’ve had him. The stuff hasn’t been there.”

Foltynewicz has, for the most part, struggled over the course of his seven-year career, entering Monday with a career 4.27 ERA over 682 2/3 innings. His lone bright spot was 2018, when he posted a 2.85 ERA and was an All-Star. For that reason alone, however, Foltynewicz should have no trouble latching on with a new team.

Sobotka, 27, has a career 4.78 ERA over 43 1/3 innings of relief in the majors. He has missed some bats, fanning 59 hitters, but has also struggled with control, walking 28 in the same span.
