The St. Louis Cardinals (54-55) open a three-game series north of the border tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays (50-59) at Rogers Centre. It is a strange day for both clubs with the Trade Deadline looming. Both clubs enter the weekend trying to reverse disappointing seasons and stay relevant in their respective postseason races or the selloff will happen prior to Monday’s 3P deadline. St. Louis sits fourth in the NL Central, 13½ games behind Milwaukee, while Toronto is fifth in the AL East, 14½ games behind division-leading Tampa Bay. More pertinent is each club’s standing in their respective Wild Card races. The Jays sit 5.5 games behind Cleveland for the final Wild Card spot while the Cards are three back of the Phillies in the NL Wild Card race.
The Cardinals arrive in Toronto after dropping yesterday’s series finale to the Cubs in ten innings, 4-2. St. Louis lost three of four to the Cubs and is just 3-7 in their last ten games. The Jays were off yesterday after taking two of three from the Nationals in Washington, DC. Despite taking that series, Toronto has won just four of their last ten games.
St. Louis will hand the ball to right-hander Kyle Leahy (7-4, 3.55 ERA) tonight. Leahy has been particularly sharp recently. Over his last three starts, the righthander has allowed three earned runs over 15 innings. In those starts he has struck out 15 hitters while walking only one. Toronto counters with their ace and one of the favorites for the Cy Young, Dylan Cease (7-5, 2.46 ERA). The first-year Blue Jay is coming off arguably his best outing of the year. He threw a complete-game one-hit shutout and struck out 12 Red Sox at Fenway last Saturday. Cease has 30 strikeouts over his last three starts.
