Its Trade Deadline Day and while front offices weigh the costs of improving their respective clubs, the Cardinals (55-57) and the Yankees (63-49) begin a three-game series in the Bronx tonight. New York takes the field in second in the AL East, 2½ games behind Tampa Bay, while the Cardinals sit fourth in the NL Central, 14½ games behind Milwaukee. The Yankees sit atop the AL Wild Card standings and with nearly 100% certainty will make the playoffs. Until recently the Cardinals looked like a playoff team as well. However, after going 3-7 over their last ten games, St. Louis sits four out of the final Wild Card spot and needing to climb over four team to claim that spot. The Cards’ level of optimism has plummeted over the past couple of weeks.
While their postseason outlook is bleak, an opportunity exists for the Cardinals who still have 50 games to play. Yesterday, St. Louis salvaged the finale of its weekend series in Toronto with a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays. Matthew Liberatore allowed but one hit over six shutout innings to highlight the win. The win snapped a three-game losing streak. The Yankees arrive home after taking a tightly contested series from the Cubs, capped by a 2-1 victory Sunday at Wrigley Field. As they have for the past couple of months, New York leaned heavily on its pitching yesterday with Gerrit Cole allowing four hits and one run over 5.2 innings enroute to his fifth win of the season.
St. Louis is expected to hand the ball tonight to right-hander Michael McGreevy (4-9, 3.57 ERA). McGreevy’s most recent outing came July 28 against the Cubs, and it was one of the roughest starts of his season. He lasted only 1⅔ innings, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits while striking out two in a 10-2 loss. Cy Young contender Cam Schlittler (10-6, 2.04 ERA) gets the start for the Pinstripes. Schlittler’s most recent start came July 29 against the White Sox, when he was outstanding despite receiving a no-decision. He worked 6⅓ innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out eight.
