Daniel Herrera, a left-handed reliever who was one of the Mets’ final cuts late in spring training, will miss the remainder of the season following Tommy John elbow surgery according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.
Despite having a 3.72 ERA and 71/36 K/BB ratio in 102 innings as a major leaguer Herrera has had trouble sticking in the big leagues, perhaps in part because he’s 5-foot-6 and in part because his fastball tops out at 85 miles per hour.
He was off to a good start at Triple-A and may have been in line for a call-up to the Mets’ bullpen at some point, but now the 27-year-old southpaw will be sidelined until mid-2013.
