After dealing with dizziness and balance issues for nearly a month, Yankees infielder Stephen Drew was diagnosed with a vestibular concussion on Wednesday. Yankees manager Joe Girardi told Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York on Friday that he’s “doubtful” to play again this season.
Drew was struck in the face by a grounder on September 9 and believes that it has contributed to his issues. However, he said that he noticed symptoms even before that. Progress has been hard to come by.
Drew still plays good defense and smacked 17 home runs in 131 games this season, but he batted just .201 with a .271 on-base percentage. Among hitters with at least 400 plate appearances, only Houston’s Chris Carter has a lower batting average while only five players have a lower on-base percentage.
The Yankees will go into the postseason with a platoon of Dustin Ackley and Rob Refsynder at second base.
