Twins closer Glen Perkins has been shut down for the season after being diagnosed with what the team is calling a strained forearm and nerve irritation.
Perkins was having an excellent season when neck problems surfaced a few weeks ago and he really struggled while trying to pitch through the discomfort, allowing five home runs in eight games after allowing a grand total of seven home runs in his previous 116 games.
It turns out his arm was a much bigger problem than his neck, although for now the Twins are portraying the news as relatively positive because there’s no structural damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.
Perkins, who had a 2.44 ERA as recently as August 25, finishes the season with a 3.65 ERA and 66/11 K/BB ratio in 62 innings while saving 34 games.
