Randy Vásquez held the Cardinals to one run in five innings and struck out six on Saturday.
Vásquez gave up six hits and walked none, but there were enough deep counts that it took him 94 pitches to get his 15 outs. Still, he lasted long enough to get the win, which is most of what matters here. Vásquez moved to 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA. He’ll pitch in Milwaukee next week, making him a middling play in mixed leagues.

Randy Vasquez was charged for three runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Giants on Monday.
Vasquez wasn’t bad, but Trevor McDonald (7 IP, 1 ER, 8 SO) was much better. He allowed two runs in the first, and another run was charged to him after he exited in the sixth. The 27-year-old has allowed eight runs over his last two starts, and it’s pushed his ERA up to 3.20 in the process. That’s still solid, but more regression is likely coming. He’ll be back on the bump Saturday for a scheduled start versus the Cardinals.

Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Griffin Canning (Achilles) will make his Padres debut on Sunday against the White Sox.
Randy Vasquez, who had been scheduled to start on Sunday, will get pushed back to Monday. That also means that Matt Waldron will get bumped from the Padres’ rotation entirely. Canning, 29, has been working his way back from last year’s Achilles injury. He posted a 3.60 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and an 18/12 K/BB ratio over 15 innings in five minor league rehab starts at Triple-A El Paso.

Randy Vásquez gave up five runs in five innings of work but was still able to pick up a win against the Cubs on Monday.
Vásquez was due for some regression — he came into this start with an unsustainable 1.88 ERA over his 28 2/3 innings — and it came relatively quickly for the right-hander. That being said, if not for a grand slam by Moisés Ballesteros, this would have looked like a much more effective outing. Lots of things look better with/without grand slams, however. The 27-year-old walked three, struck out four and allowed nine hard-hit balls before exiting. He’ll look to get back on track versus the White Sox on Sunday.

Randy Vásquez tossed seven shutout innings with five strikeouts in a win over the Rockies on Tuesday.
Vásquez was incredible on Tuesday, holding the Rockies scoreless over seven frames in Colorado. He scattered only three hits and did not walk a batter, tossing an efficient 56 of 84 pitches for strikes. He collected five strikeouts on 12 whiffs in the dominant outing. The 27-year-old right-hander is off to an excellent start to the season, posting a 1.88 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 30/8 K/BB ratio across 28 2/3 innings. Vásquez will look to keep it going against the Cubs in San Diego on Monday.

Randy Vásquez was lifted after allowing four runs in four innings Wednesday against the Mariners.
Vásquez’s velocity was again above his norms tonight, but his four walks caused him problems as his ERA jumped from 1.02 to 2.49. He fanned six, and he still seems worth trusting against the Rockies in Coors Field next week.

Randy Vásquez was terrific in a no-decision against the Rockies on Thursday night, striking out eight batters over 5 2/3 innings of one-run baseball.
Vásquez scattered seven hits on the evening and didn’t allow a base on balls. The only blemish on his night came on a solo blast off the bat of Brenton Doyle in the third inning. The 27-year-old hurler got 13 whiffs on 92 offerings in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 24 percent. He has been brilliant through his first three starts, compiling a 1.02 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a 19/4 K/BB ratio across 17 2/3 innings. As long as he keeps exhibiting this increased velocity and is piling up strikeouts, he deserves a weekly look in all mixed leagues. Vásquez will do battle against the Mariners his next time out at home on Wednesday.

Randy Vásquez turned in six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Saturday.
Vásquez succeeded again, even though his velocity spike was gone on a 43-degree day in Boston. Vásquez averaged 95.6 mph with his fastball this spring and 95.0 mph in shutting out the Tigers a week ago. Today, he was at 93.4 mph, which was right at his 2025 average. It probably was largely the cold, though. Vásquez settled for three strikeouts. He gave up 11 hard-hit balls, but the Red Sox managed just one extra-base hit against him. He should be a great play next week in a home start against the Rockies.

Randy Vásquez struck out eight over six scoreless innings to help the Padres to a 3-0 win over the Tigers on Saturday.
Vásquez’s first start of 2026 was one of the best he’s had as a big-leaguer. He allowed only two hits before exiting, and he generated a solid 13 swings-and-misses while whiffing eight against three walks. We’ve seen flashes of this ability from Vásquez in the past, but consistency has not been his friend in his short MLB career. We’ll see if he can back this up next week, likely against Boston.

Randy Vásquez allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Brewers on Saturday.
Vásquez only allowed four hits, which isn’t too bad. Three of those hits went over the fence, which is less than ideal. The 27-year-old is expected to open the season in the rotation, but there’s just too much volatility to suggest he’s someone who needs to be on rosters in mixed leagues.
