Braves signed outfielder Roosevelt Brown to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Back from Japan. Brown, 29, hit .307/.392/539 for Orix in 2003 and .269/.374/.472 last season. He’s a better hitter versus right-handers than a handful of major league left fielders, but the Braves will probably let him beat up Triple-A pitching for most of the year.

Roosevelt Brown, who was just 1-for-20, put himself back into the competition for a bench spot by going 3-for-3 today.
Brown is trying to beat out Esix Snead and John Barnes for a job. If none of the three step up, the Braves figure to take a peek at the waiver wire later this month. They could also consider keeping both Wilson Betemit and Pete Orr. The two are supposed to be competing for one job in the infield, but Orr can play the outfield.

    Braves released outfielder Roosevelt Brown.
Brown couldn’t win a bench job by going 5-for-34 this spring. No other major league club is going to want him at this late date, so he might return to Japan.
