Rockies LHP prospect Sam Weatherly fired 5 1/3 scoreless innings on Tuesday with 10 strikeouts for Low-A Fresno.
Weatherly scattered three hits, but did issue four free passes. The southpaw was the 81st pick of the 2021 draft, and has a chance to be a contributor to the Colorado rotation in the coming years. Control is an issue -- as seen in the four walks on Tuesday -- but there are two plus pitches at his disposal in his fastball and slider, and he has shown the makings of a solid change, as well. If Weatherly can’t throw more consistent strikes he could be excellent in relief, but the Rockies will give him a chance to start, and there’s some pretty solid upside in the former Clemson hurler’s left arm if he can keep the walks to a minimum.
