Reynolds heads to Japan a couple weeks after being non-tendered by the Padres to attempt to bolster his long-term value after posting a serviceable 4.03 ERA – 4.14 FIP – and 27.7 percent strikeout rate over 38 innings across 28 appearances for San Diego over the last two seasons. The 27-year-old righty has pitched exclusively in relief since being drafted by the Marlins in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Reynolds didn’t do much to establish himself last season, posting a 5.33 ERA in 27 innings, and that he’s now out of options makes him less useful as relief depth. Cruz would probably be a nice swingman if he had better command, but it just doesn’t seem to be coming.

Reynolds heads back to the minors to make room for the Padres to bring up Randy Vásquez to start Saturday’s game against the Rockies. The 27-year-old righty holds a lackluster 5.33 ERA across 27 innings over 19 appearances this season in the big leagues.

Reynolds has a 5.55 ERA in 24 1/3 innings out of the Padres pen this season. He was last seen walking five and giving up five runs in 1 2/3 innings versus the Red Sox on Aug. 8.

Reynolds heads back to the minors to free up a roster spot for Padres ace Michael King to return from the injured list for Saturday’s showdown against the Red Sox. The 27-year-old righty was torched for five runs over 1 2/3 innings in relief during Friday’s series opener.

Reynolds has been summoned to fortify San Diego’s relief corps with lefty JP Sears being shipped to the minors. The 27-year-old righty has compiled a solid 3.97 ERA and 22/8 K/BB ratio across 22 2/3 innings (17 appearances) this season at the highest level.

The Padres need a fifth starter tonight, so back down goes Reynolds. He has a 3.97 ERA and a 22/8 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings out of the San Diego pen this season.

Reynolds can come up despite being just sent down Saturday by the Padres because he’s replacing Ryan Bergert, as Bergert was placed on the 15-day injured list with a forearm contusion. Reynolds will operate as a middle-inning reliever while with San Diego in this stint.

Reynolds will head to the minors with Bryan Hoeing (shoulder) off the 60-day injured list for the Padres. Reynolds has compiled a 4.15 ERA over 21 innings with San Diego, and he’ll likely be back before the end of 2025.

Reynolds got the start on Saturday against the Braves after Micheal King was scratched with a shoulder issue. He gave up a run on a hit batter and a base hit in the second, then surrendered a solo homer to Matt Olson in the third. Austin Riley followed with a double, knocking Reynolds from the game at 57 pitches. Reynolds will likely revert to a long relief role regardless of King’s status, with Stephen Kolek in line to join the rotation should King require a stint on the injured list.
