Torey Lovullo will return as Diamondbacks manager next season, reports MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert.
Nothing official from the Diamondbacks yet, but all indications are that Lovullo will be back after managing to guide Arizona to an 80-82 record this season despite an avalanche of injuries to key contributors. The 60-year-old skipper has gone 664-692 (.490) over nine seasons at the helm since 2017. He could potentially be on the hot seat next season since Arizona has missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons after making it to the Fall Classic back in 2023.
  • The Diamondbacks hired Brian Kaplan as pitching coach.
Kaplan comes to the Diamondbacks after serving last year as the assistant pitching coach with the Phillies; a position he held for the last three season with Philadelphia. He replaces Brent Strom after Strom was fired following the disappointing 2024 season for Arizona.
  • MIA Manager #55
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker was named as the National League Manager of the Year on Tuesday.
The first-time skipper led the Marlins to an 84-78 record and a Wild Card berth in his first season at the helm of a big league club. Schumaker garnered eight first place, eight second place and eight third place votes in a closely contested race. Former Brewers skipper and current Cubs manager Craig Counsell finished as the runner-up, while Braves manager Brian Snitker, Diamondbacks skipper Torey Lovullo and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts rounded out the top five.
  • According to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, the Diamondbacks have extended manager Torey Lovullo through the 2026 season.
No word yet on the financial details yet, but it’s obviously a well-deserved extension for Lovullo who is fresh off of winning his first National League pennant. The Diamondbacks are loaded with premium young talent and should be a force to be reckoned with in the National League once again in 2024 under Lovullo’s leadership.
  • Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Diamondbacks have extended manager Torey Lovullo through the 2024 season.
Lovullo has guided the Diamondbacks to a 35-24 record and is tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the National League. Arizona hasn’t made the postseason since the 2017 campaign, which was during Lovullo’s first season as manager. There should be an official announcement in the coming days.

  • Diamondbacks exercised manager Torey Lovullo’s club option for the 2023 season.
Lovullo has guided the rebuilding Diamondbacks to a respectable 60-67 record this season in a loaded NL West division. The 57-year-old skipper has been at the helm for the last six seasons, going 397-438 (.475). Arizona hasn’t made the postseason since the 2017 campaign, but appears to have a promising future, especially if top prospect Corbin Carroll becomes a true franchise cornerstone.

  • Ken Rosenthal and Andy McCullough of The Athletic report that the Diamondbacks will hire Brent Strom as their new pitching coach.
Strom, 73, had indicated that he might retire, but he lives in Arizona and the D-backs have convinced him to handle their pitching staff. He has a terrific reputation and is a great get for a Diamondbacks team which finished last in the National League with an inflated 5.11 ERA last year. Strom spent the last eight seasons as the pitching coach for the Astros, playing a major role in their World Series title run back in 2017.

  • Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks have hired Peter Bourjos as a roving minor-league outfield instructor and base running coordinator.
Bourjos played in the majors for parts of 10 seasons with the Angels, Cardinals, Phillies, Rays and Braves from 2010 until 2019. The 34-year-old former outfielder spent the last two seasons as a scout with the Rockies.

  • The Diamondbacks have hired Jeff Banister as their new bench coach.
Banister was bench coach for the Pirates from 2010-14 before managing the Rangers from 2015-18. He worked in the Pirates’ front office as a special assistant in 2019 but has been out of the game the last two years.

  • According to Zach Buchanan of The Athletic, the Diamondbacks have reassigned pitching coach Matt Herges.
No big surprise after the D-backs finished second-to-last in team ERA (5.11) this season, ahead of only the Orioles. Torey Lovullo will be back as manager -- he got a one-year contract extension with an option for 2023 in late September -- but there is going to be a big shakeup among his staff. The contract of catching coach Robby Hammock was not renewed and bench coach Luis Urreta will move into a staff position. Rick Short and Drew Hedman, who served as the team’s co-hitting coaches this year, will not return in those jobs.
