The 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Series season will conclude Saturday at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta with championships up for grabs in all four categories in the Motul Petit Le Mans.
The biggest gap is in the Grand Touring Prototype as No. 31 Whelen Racing Cadillac V-Series.R driver Jack Aitken has a 147-point lead over Laurin Heinrich in the No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963, which led two of the three practice sessions Thursday on the 12-turn, 2.54-mile road course in Braselton, Georgia.
Aitken can clinch the driver championship by finishing at least ninth in GTP. Depending on qualifying results, there’s a chance Aitken could clinch the title Friday.
Atiken won last year’s Petit Le Mans with co-drivers Earl Bamber and Frederik Vesti, and the same trio will return for Saturday’s 10-hour race.
Heinrich is trying to become an unlikely long-shot champion after racing for three Porsches in the premier hybrid prototype category this season: Porsche Penske Motorsport’s Nos. 6 and 7 and the No. 5 963 of JDC-Miller MotorSports.
The championship battles are much closer in the other classes. In LMP2, Tom Dillmann and Jeremy Clarke of the No. 43 Inter Europol Competition ORECA LMP2 07 lead Alex Quinn and George Kurtz of the No. 04 Crowdstrike Racing by APR by only four points.
In GTD Pro, Tommy Milner and Nicky Catsburg of the No. 4 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports Corvette Z06 GT3.R have a 47-point lead on Connor De Phillippi and Neil Verhagen of the No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO.
In GTD, Russell Ward and Philip Ellis of the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 lead by six points over Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher in the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 EVO.
