Hunter Lawrence wins Southwick 450 Moto 1 under a red flag

Hunter Lawrence took the lead from Jett Lawrence with four minutes remaining on the clock in the Southwick National at The Wick 338. It was role reversal from Moto 1 at RedBud, when Hunter tipped over on the last lap to hand the moto win to Jett.

Still, Jett put aside last week’s frustration to lead from the gate drop to the checkers in Moto 1 of the Southwick National at The Wick 388.

Jett built a three second lead in the first half of the moto, but Hunter began closing the gap as if he was simply biding his time. At RedBud, Hunter was able to pressure Jett, who had nothing for his brother at the end of Moto 2.

Haiden Deegan spent the entire moto in third and he kept Hunter in sight for most of the race. With Jett crash, he had a new rider to chase, but Jett recovered and beat the rookie to the line by more than 14 seconds.

Jorge Prado is having a career season and after giving up the position in the second half of the race to Lucas Coenen, he regained the position when the Belgian crashed with three minutes remaining on the clock.

Garrett Marchbanks rounded out the top five.

Coenen provided the highlight reel, however. He was the fastest qualifier, but crashed in Turn 1. Coenen stormed through the field and was in the top 20 by the end of Lap 1. He passed Cooper Webb for 10th on Lap 3 and Dylan Ferrandis on Lap 7.

Coenen’s bike lost power midway through a jump on Lap 13 and he crashed hard while running fourth. Coenen was dazed from the crash, but gave a thumb’s up signal from the side of the track.

In his first race on the Factory Kawasaki in relief for Chase Sexton, Cornelius Tøndel scored his first top-10 of the season in ninth.
