The two-time All-Star was drafted by the Heat back in 2002, so now it all comes full circle as he begins the post-playing career on the bench in Miami. “You talk about who we are and what we are and what we embody, Butler is somebody who brought me up under his wing,” said Udonis Haslem, who is set to return to Miami for his 18th season. “They talk about OGs, Butler, it sounds crazy because of how young he is but he was my OG. When I came into this organization... he was somebody who showed me what it was to be a professional.”

Butler should back up Lamar Odom and Kobe Bryant this season.

Butler likely will play with a splint on his finger, which could have an effect on his shooting.

Butler had 22 points before coming down on an opponent’s foot in the last game. He said he’s going to try to play.

He should be okay to start tonight against the Pistons.

It remains uncertain whether Butler will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Butler sat out Thursday’s afternoon session. He is considered day to day.

Samaki Walker and Jerome Beasley are other candidates for the injured list. If Butler is placed on the injured list, the Heat would expect to have him back as soon as his five games are up.

Miami would be looking to free itself of Jones’ hefty contract, but losing Butler would be too high a price to pay for a team trying to rebuild. Those with knowledge of the Heat’s situation say the report was unfounded.

Butler isn’t eligible to play until Saturday against Minnesota, but the Heat is now optimistic he’ll be ready then.
