Yahoo! Sports’ Kelly Iko reports the Rockets plan to apply for a disabled players’ exemption.
Fred VanVleet (knee) suffered a torn ACL just before the start of training camp. While he has not officially been ruled out for the entire 2025-26 season, a DPE can only be granted if the player will not play. Per the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the exemption would be equivalent to 50 percent of the injured player’s annual salary. VanVleet is due to make $25 million this season. The exemption would give the Rockets more room to account for VanVleet’s absence, which would impact Reed Sheppard’s role if another guard is added to the roster.
  • HOU Guard #15
Reed Sheppard shot 12-of-22 from the field in Thursday’s win over the Hawks, scoring 29 points with six rebounds, six assists, four steals, three blocks and five three-pointers.
Houston’s rotation for Thursday’s preseason finale was limited, as head coach Ime Udoka rested most of his key players. However, that decision opened things up for Sheppard, who took advantage of the opportunity. In addition to shooting efficiently and making plays for others, the second-year guard was an absolute menace defensively. Sheppard’s role on Thursday did not resemble what he’ll be asked to do once the games count. However, his solid play throughout the preseason was encouraging, especially with Fred VanVleet (knee) possibly missing the entire season. Sheppard isn’t an automatic top-100 pick in standard drafts, but he should not last too far beyond that threshold.
  • HOU Guard #15
Reed Sheppard finished Wednesday’s win over the Jazz with 11 points (4-of-7 FGs, 1-of-2 FTs), four rebounds, three assists, one steal, two blocks and two three-pointers.
After an occasionally shaky performance in Houston’s preseason opener on Monday, Sheppard looked more comfortable Wednesday night. Having Kevin Durant on the floor certainly helps, but the second-year guard deserves credit for his improved production and efficiency. With Durant, Amen Thompson and Alperen Şengün on the court, there won’t be too much pressure on Sheppard if he were to begin the regular season as Fred VanVleet’s (knee) replacement in the starting lineup. Selecting him with a top-100 pick would be too much, but Sheppard should be drafted in all standard leagues.
  • HOU Guard #15
Reed Sheppard finished Monday’s win over the Hawks with seven points (2-of-6 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), three rebounds, one assist and one three-pointer.
While the Rockets have not decided who will step into the role left vacant by the injured Fred VanVleet (knee), they’ll likely give 2024 lottery pick Sheppard every opportunity to win the job. The second-year guard played 14 minutes in Monday’s preseason opener, offering limited production in that role. Starting center Alperen Şengün is a capable playmaker for others, so the ball will be in his hands more with VanVleet unavailable. As a result, Sheppard’s assist production may not spike if he’s allowed to start once the regular season begins.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports Fred VanVleet (knee) suffered a torn ACL.
With the offseason acquisition of Kevin Durant, there has been plenty of optimism surrounding the Houston Rockets. Their hopes of winning the loaded Western Conference took a significant hit with Monday’s news regarding VanVleet. While the veteran point guard shot just 37.8 percent from the field, the lowest mark for VanVleet since his rookie season, he remained a key figure for a team that finished with the second-best record in the West. Also, the low field goal percentage did not prevent VanVleet from offering close to top-50 value in fantasy basketball. His absence means Houston will need second-year guard Reed Sheppard to hit the ground running, with Aaron Holiday providing additional depth at the point. Sheppard is well worth the risk in standard leagues, while Holiday is someone to target in deeper formats. However, Amen Thompson’s fantasy value may receive the most significant boost, especially after he filled in well as Houston’s primary playmaker when VanVleet missed time last season.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports Fred VanVleet intends to sign a two-year, $50 million contract with the Rockets.
The Rockets will decline VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option for the upcoming season to put the new deal in place. He has a player option for the second season of this deal, so he could opt out again next summer. If he accepts the option, he’ll be under contract through the 2026-27 season. VanVleet is the best point guard option on a team that is looking to win a championship after trading for Kevin Durant, adding the lethal scorer to the team that finished as the No. 2 seed in the West this past season.

The Athletic’s Kelly Iko reports the Rockets are likely to decline Fred VanVleet’s team option and discuss a long-term extension in the coming days.
The Rockets have until Sunday to make a decision on VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option. NBA Insider Marc Stein also reported there’s a “strong expectation” that the Rockets agree to a long-term deal with VanVleet before free agency officially opens up on June 30. VanVleet could be looking at a three-year offer, though it would be for less money annually than his team option. The Rockets will be looking to stay under the first apron of the salary cap this year, but VanVleet is certainly a player they want to keep in the wake of the Kevin Durant trade.
  • HOU Point Guard #5
Fred VanVleet recorded 17 points (6-of-13 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and three three-pointers in 44 minutes in a Game 7 loss to the Warriors on Sunday.
While VanVleet did cool off after an excellent two-game run to help force a Game 7, he remained solid on Sunday. The veteran point guard finished a blocked shot shy of a complete stat line and was third in scoring behind Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. VanVleet has a team option for next season, and both sides have expressed interest in continuing the partnership. The question is what the final price tag will be. Despite his poor field goal percentage, VanVleet can be incredibly valuable as a fantasy asset.
  • HOU Point Guard #5
Fred VanVleet shot 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-9 from the foul line in a Game 6 win over the Warriors on Friday, scoring 29 points with eight rebounds, eight assists and six three-pointers in 40 minutes.
After scoring 17 points or less in the series’ first three games, VanVleet has kicked things up a notch at the right time. He’s scored 25 or more in three straight, shooting over 50 percent from the field in each outing. Due to VanVleet’s performance on Friday, the Rockets will host a Game 7 on Sunday. While he hasn’t been the most consistent shooter, VanVleet has a history of stepping up in big moments. With his team trailing three games to one, the veteran point guard made good on that reputation in Games 5 and 6.
  • HOU Point Guard #5
Fred VanVleet led the Rockets with 26 points (8-of-13 FGs), one rebound, two assists, one block and four three-pointers in Game 5 against the Warriors on Wednesday.
After scoring 25 points with eight triples on Monday, VanVleet picked up right where he left off and scored 14 points in the first quarter on Wednesday. He didn’t end up contributing much else over the final three quarters, but the damage had already been done. VanVleet led all scorers in this game to help Houston keep its season alive. He’ll need to carry this hot shooting to Golden State on Friday for Game 6.
