Don Nelson ties all-time coaching wins record

Well, the old lunatic finally got there.

With the Warriors’ 113-112 win over the Raptors (thanks, Chris Bosh!), Nelson tied Lenny Wilkens for most wins by an NBA coach with 1,332. That’s a lot of wins.

For his part, Nelson’s mostly spoken about wanting to get the record over with, so there won’t be so much focus on it. It’s also bizarre circumstances. Normally a record like that would be met with great fanfare and adulation, but with the Warriors a shaky proposition from ownership all the way down to rebound execution, Nelson’s not exactly getting the normal share of highlight packages set to dramatic music.

With one more win, Nelson will set the record. The Warriors play Washington, Minnesota, and the Clippers before facing three playoff teams, so the odds are in his favor. And no matter what you think about Nelson’s tactics or career, it’s still a feat worthy of significant recognition.

Just think how many he’d have if his teams played defense.

Either way, as Tim Kawakami points out, Nelson should be a lock for the Hall of Fame for his contribution to the game.
