Bucs LG Ali Marpet has announced his retirement from the NFL after seven seasons.
It’s a stunner from the 28-year-old, one who just made the Pro Bowl. The No. 61 overall pick of the 2015 Draft, Marpet was never named an All-Pro, but he was just shy of that level. He allowed only one sack of Tom Brady over the past two seasons. It was a top one percentile career outcome for a player who made the big leagues out of small-school Hobart. The only upside for the Bucs is that it clears $10 million over their 2022 books, but that is not a trade-off they would take if it were their choice, especially with C Ryan Jensen headed to the open market. With a number of key free agents following Brady’s retirement, the Bucs are not quite in teardown territory, though they are closer than could have possibly been expected following their Divisional Round loss.
