Lions signed Illinois QB Luke Altmyer.
Altmyer (6’2”/210) is a fifth-year prospect who got his start at Ole Miss before transferring to Illinois in 2023. The former four-star recruit won the job as Illinois’ starter in his first season with the team, and finished the season with a 1,877-13-10 line in nine games, with an injury cutting his season short. He rebounded in 2024, throwing for 2,717-22-6 in 13 games, and had similar production in 2025 (3,007-22-5), posting a career-high 67.4 completion percentage. Altmyer is an above-average athlete at the position and posted a 4.72 40-yard dash at the combine, but he’s also a bit undersized with only average arm talent. His high sack totals at Illinois (95 sacks in 35 games) can be partially blamed on his offensive line, which consistently graded as one of the worst pass-blocking units in the nation during his time there, but there are times he would have benefited from taking off and running rather than trying to extend the play. His inability to avoid sacks is a major concern. Like most QBs who have passed through Illinois as of late, Altymer’s production doesn’t stand out, and there are plenty of concerns about his accuracy and how it will translate to the next level. Altmyer will likely spend most of his NFL career, however long that may be, battling for spots on 53-man rosters.

Mississippi freshman QB Luke Altmyer completed 15-of-28 passes for 174 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 21-7 loss to Baylor on Saturday.
Going into the game, the only way Altmyer (6'2/195) was going to get extensive playing time was if the game turned into a blowout. That turned very quickly when Matt Corral had his leg rolled up on. Altmyer took the opportunity and showed signs of being the starter next season for the Rebels. His first interception was another sign of things to come. He had a slant route inside the ten open, but the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage and returned for a touchdown. He did find Braylon Sanders on a go route later on that was a perfect throw. This wasn’t the result that the Rebels wanted, but the future is bright.

Mississippi redshirt junior QB Matt Corral (lower leg) was helped off the field after suffering an injury during Saturday’s game at Auburn.
Corral (6'1/205) had his left leg landed on by an Auburn defender on a pass play, with the quarterback managing to avoid getting sacked. However he was limping noticeably after releasing the pass, and had to be helped off the field by team trainers. Luke Altmyer has since replaced Corral, and it is unknown if the Heisman candidate will be able to return Saturday night.

Mississippi redshirt junior QB Matt Corral (undisclosed) is dressed out for Saturday’s game against LSU.
Corral (6'1/205) took a beating in last weekend’s wild win over Tennessee, and there was some question as to whether or not the Heisman candidate would be able to play Saturday. The redshirt junior appears to be good to go, however, as he was on the field in full uniform going through pregame warmups. Freshman Luke Altmyer is next in line should Corral either be a late scratch, or suffer an injury during the game.

Mississippi freshman QB Luke Altmyer would start on Saturday if Matt Corral is unable to play.
That is a big “if.” Head coach Lane Kiffin was hush about his star quarterback’s injury status and whether or not he will play. He went on The Paul Finebaum Show Friday and said he hopes Corral can play. He also mentioned if Corral is unable to go then Altmyer (6'2"/195) would get the start. Kiffin said Altmyer “has done some really good things in practice this week and is ready to go.” He has four passing attempts this season with no completions. Mississippi will host LSU this Saturday.

Mississippi freshman QB Luke Altmyer (undisclosed) was limited in Saturday’s scrimmage.
Altmyer (6'2/195) initially committed to Florida State almost a year ago, as he was one of HC Mike Norvell’s first pulls as the new HC down in Tallahassee. However the blue-chip prospect opted to re-open his recruitment in late December and immediately turned around to hop on the Lane Train at Ole Miss. The Starkville, MS native is rated as the 13th best pro-style quarterback and 186th overall recruit nationally from the 2021 high school class according to the 247 Sports composite ranks. He is the early favorite to take over the starting quarterback job when NFL Draft prospect Matt Corral eventually departs, which will likely occur after this season if he plays well.

Ole Miss received a verbal commitment from four-star 2021 QB Luke Altmyer.

However the blue-chip prospect opted to re-open his recruitment just one day ago and has now immediately turned around and hopped on the Lane Train at Ole Miss. The Starkville, MS native is rated as the 13th best pro-style quarterback and 186th overall recruit nationally from the 2021 high school class according to the 247 Sports composite ranks. He chose the in-state school over LSU, Wisconsin, Louisville Georgia Tech and a host of others.

Four-star 2021 QB Luke Altmyer announced his decommitment from Florida State on Thursday.
Altmyer initially committed to Florida State almost a year ago. He was one of HC Mike Norvell’s first pulls as the new HC down in Tallahassee, but it seems this one won’t see it through until the end. Altmyer, one of the most sought-after QBs of this class, has decided to re-open his recruitment. A 6-foot-2, 195-pound “pro-style” passer with some dangerous accuracy, Altmyer has offers from the likes of Georgia Tech, Louisville, Wisconsin, LSU, and Ole Miss. In the wake of Altmyer’s decommitment from FSU, many experts have billed Ole Miss, an in-state school for Altmyer, as the most likely destination.

Florida State received a verbal commitment from four-star 2021 QB Luke Altmyer.
New HC Mike Norvell is already setting the foundation for his next offensive powerhouse. Per Rivals, Altmyer (6'2/185) had a slew of offers from other top schools, primarily from the SEC and ACC. Altmyer is a pro-style QB with a quick release and stable accuracy. In Norvell’s spread-offense system, he could be a solid starter sooner rather than later.
